Description

The YMCA Academy is an independent middle and secondary school (grades 7 to 12) offering Ontario Ministry of Education courses to youth with learning style differences, who have disengaged from formal learning institutions, or who are at risk of doing so.

In addition to being under-served by the larger school system, our students have mild learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia) and/or mild behavioural challenges (e.g. ADHD).


Responsibilities:


  • Provide a safe and inclusive space for students.
  • Deescalate situations when students are emotionally activated.
  • Provide supportive counselling as well as crisis intervention.
  • Provide referrals to various external support services.
  • Participate in all activities that provide students support, safety and security.
  • Promote and participate in mental health initiatives within the school.
  • Serve as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues.
  • Assist in developing programs to promote positive student behavior as well as intervention strategies.
  • Discuss appropriate outcomes for students with the Academy staff in accordance to the Students Rights document.
  • Advocate for students.
  • Support students to make informed choices that will lead toward their personal growth, development and well being.
  • Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers and administrators regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and Academy staff to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
  • Liaise with parents/guardians and students when communication is needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • S.W., Child and Youth Worker Diploma, Social Service Worker Diploma, or other related degree/diploma.
  • At least two years experience working with youth at risk.
  • Familiarity with the youth service agencies and youth resources in Toronto.
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers;
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design

Education:
Preferred

  • Diploma or better in Social Service Worker or related field
  • Diploma or better in Child and Youth Worker or related field
  • Bachelors or better in Social Service Worker or related field
