The Specialist, Global External Communications will support the traffic and administration needs of the Global External Communications team, which consists of a community of practitioners across media relations, thought leadership, financial communications, issues management, and business-line communications.

This position will help the team track progress against our strategy, specifically monitoring our engagement with priority journalists and resulting earned Share of Voice.


The Specialist, Global External Communications will be a member of Manulife's Global Communications team, consisting of internal and external practitioners across our four lines of business.

The Global Communications team is responsible for building and executing strategic communications plans that support Manulife's business goals, protecting and enhancing our trusted reputation, profile our company as a great place to work and drive aligned communications.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Key team member responsible for tracking and measuring the team's progress against our global external communications strategy.
  • Work with media relations team globally to track and measure stakeholder engagement and analyze global media activities across the function.
  • Develop Share of Voice dashboards for global external communications team, CEO platform and various business units using Meltwater.
  • Analyze data and information to provide insights and recommendations; own analysis and reporting of Share of Voice quarterly.
  • Support change management of varying scope and type with tasks typically focused on execution and organization.
  • Coordinate, track and manage the delivery and receipt of materials, including press releases, for translation, as required.
  • Support distribution of press releases on platforms like Cision.
  • Work with Financial Communications team to manage aspects of financial communications, including news release distribution across channels, organize materials and reviews with relevant quality standards.
  • Support the development of briefing materials for media interviews.
  • Support maintenance of a thought leadership calendar, including for speaking opportunities and awards.
  • Track progress against plans and escalate issues and concerns.
  • Support broader enterprisewide communications initiatives as needed.

Experience & Education; Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:

  • Relevant experience, with time spent in an agency environment, and/or corporate communications role in a complex, matrixed, global organization.
  • Experience leading monitoring, tracking and reporting in a communications role.
  • Proven experience working with, and interpreting, data sets and other forms of analytics.
  • Significant expertise in Microsoft Office, including experience developing and maintaining pivot tables in Excel.
  • Experience using Cision and Meltwater and/or related monitoring, contact database and distribution tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to anticipate issues, think proactively to resolve possible risks.
  • Comfort working in a fastpaced and deadlinedriven environment.
  • Ability to interpret instruction for effective delivery while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Nonstandard hours are an occasional occurrence.
  • Bilingual French language skills are an asset.

Salary & Benefits


The annual base salary for this role in the primary location of Toronto, Ontario is expected to be between $58,650.00 CAD - $97,750.00 CAD.
