OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Memengwaa Supervisor, this Shkabeh position will provide oversight in our transitional housing for Indigenous youth in and from Child and Family Services care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
- Provide onsite support for youth living in transitional housing to enhance and pursue mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness.
- Provide emotional support to youth through conversation, smudging, referrals, etc.
- Opportunity for evening shift to plan and offer onsite programming and recreational activities for youth such as movie nights, cooking, sewing, beading, etc.
- Where applicable, complete house duties such as meal planning or prep, light housekeeping, cooking for youth, etc.
- Conduct building walk throughs throughout shift.
- Conduct periodic check ins with youth; engage with youth throughout shift.
- Intervene in situations of concern such as noise complaints, unauthorized guests, suspicion of substance misuse.
- Intervene in crises in a calm and effective manner, including supporting youth to access appropriate and immediate resources such as community crisis response resources.
- Attend emergency resources with youth, where appropriate and required.
- Report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
- Monitor cameras and report suspicious activity to security team.
- Conduct hourly checkins with other support workers to ensure team safety.
- Maintain accurate and complete shift logs, building walk through logs, and incident reports.
- Attend training as directed and participate in team meetings when requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Training in the social services field is considered an asset but not required; a combination of previous work experience, lived experience and training will be considered.
- Satisfactory criminal record check, child and adult abuse registry checks, and prior contact check required.
- Valid MB class 5 Drivers license with access to a vehicle is preferred.
- First Aid/CPR, ASIST, and/or Naloxone training required; additional training, including trauma and crisis training, an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge and/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture and traditional philosophies.
- Ability to walk multiple flights of stairs required.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective working relationships.
- Experience with child welfare and/or youth aging out of care, transitional housing, an asset.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin an asset.
