**Program Overview - Language Programs, Community Programs

The CNC ECE Worker is responsible for the care of children in group settings by working with other team members to plan, supervise and implement the daily program.

This position is responsible for providing appropriate direction, encouragement and support to the children and their parents in addition to being flexible, resourceful, sensitive, and respectful of individual needs.

As well, the objective is to enhance the children's and parents' participation in the program, and their interaction with people from other cultures to facilitate their linguistic, social, and cultural development.


What You Will Do

  • Take the lead in meeting CNC requirements of using a childcentred approach in providing care for newcomer children by panning, implementing, and evaluating ageappropriate programs for children of learners to enhance their social, physical and emotional development.
  • Follow all practices in the CNC room as per funder and organizational policies.
  • Recognize and problemsolve any issues that arise.
  • In accordance with the Manager, English Language Services, plan and oversee appropriate activities for children in accordance with program philosophy.
  • Set reasonable limits according to the child's developmental stage, and give appropriate direction, encouragement, and support individually and in group.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as taking registration of children; maintain records, including registration form, attendance form, child information form and session management form (program activity).
  • Ensure daily safety, health, and hygiene of the children at the CNC space. Inspect CNC space for safety issues and complete a space safety checklist. Ensure the orderly arrangement, appearance, decor and learning environment of the CNC space.
  • Provide parent orientation as well as staff orientation per CNC program. Communicate with parents and to Manager for any issues related to the children.
  • Assess equipment needs, purchase and upkeep equipment and furniture. Ensure there are sufficient appropriate materials and equipment for the operation of a session.
  • Report any signs of physical, sexual and / or emotional abuse of any children in care to the Program Manager.
  • Oversee the use of volunteers and placement students.
  • Participate in regular supervisory sessions with the Program Manager.
  • Participate in team / unit meetings when required.
  • Upgrade training and education as directed by WoodGreen to fulfil the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ensure the antiracism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
  • Represent the unit on internal staff committees as directed by the Unit Director.
  • Performs other related duties as required from time to time.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Completion of twoyear ECE diploma from recognized Community College. Registration in and valid current membership in good standing with ECE College; proof of yearly membership must be submitted.
  • 2 years experience working in child care field.

  • An understanding of settlement issues and the distinctive needs of newcomer children and families.
  • An understanding of childcentred programming.
  • Knowledge of research and practices specific to young children, including special initiatives relevant to immigrants and refugees.
  • Ability to implement programming and make changes that are beneficial to young newcomers.
  • Willingness to work in conditions involving exposure to bodily fluids (including saliva, urine, feces and blood) and potentially infectious diseases.
  • Ability to carry/lift children and carry/lift/move moderately heavy items.
  • Ability to use professional judgment and problemsolve daily within program guidelines.
