Overview:


The Quality & Operations Student is responsible for the safe and effective implementation of quality control and operational support for production and shipping of concrete ready mix products.

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Student shall be expected to travel to various plants within the Northern Ontario region to provide project support as needed at various locations.

This is a student-level (or CO-OP) seasonal position with potential to extend pending project requirements. 2 Positions are available (1 in North-Central Ontario and 1 in Northwestern Ontario).


Responsibilities:


Health & Safety

  • Implementation of Lafarge Safety Policies, and compliance with government legislation.
  • Execution of Job Hazard Analyses for QC and Plant Operational Tasks, and implementation of action items

Support to Operations

  • Travel to and from various Concrete plants to provide assistance with batching, material testing, or other operational duties
  • Perform routine organization and cleanup tasks around plant and shop
  • Assist with preparation and casting of concrete blocks
  • Assist with general administrative duties such as data entry and paperwork

Technical Support and Quality Control

  • Work with QC team to ensure timely entry of all testing results in QC software/database is up to date in database. Ensure all technical documentation is updated according to Quality Plan.
  • Implement Lafarge quality program, including conducting sampling of concrete and aggregates, testing of plastic concrete air content, slump, temperature, casting of concrete test cylinders, conducting trials, record keeping and reporting thereof.
  • Record and monitor RMX product quality for the area and provide regular daily feedback to plant and quality staff
  • Pick up and drop off materials and samples as needed from plant(s) and job site(s)
  • Effective use of MS Excel Software and various reporting tools

Relationships with Others

  • Reporting to the Technical Manager; the Student is to work in conjunction with the plant, operations, and sales team, in an effort to aid in the production and delivery of a quality product that meets and/or exceed the customer's needs.

Qualifications:

Education & Work Experience:


  • Postsecondary education in Civil Engineering/Technology or equivalent.

Knowledge & Skills:


  • Should have excellent written and oral communication skills and capable of creating good relationships internally and externally with our customers.
  • Must also be able to work well as part of a team and independently.
  • Must possess full G-Class (or higher) Driver's License with a clean driving abstract

Physical Attributes:


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb stairs & ladders; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear and smell. Infrequently the employee is required to work in awkward situations; balance; stoop, kneel or crouch
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:


  • Must be able to work in outdoor and indoor work environments in all weather.
  • Employee must perform work outdoors in all weather conditions, and will work around moving mechanical parts and equipment. Various PPE will include safety boots, reflective clothing, safety glasses, gloves and hard hat. Additional PPE may be required depending upon tasks and locations.
  • Availability for shift work is required. Flexible hours will be required to meet the demands of our customers which will include overtime and potentially some weekend work.
  • Employee will frequently be travelling/driving to farther plants and assist with projects and may, on occasion, be required to do so over multiple days at a time.
  • This role is will require the handling of cements, aggregates, concrete and various related equipment.
