Communications Coordinator at Ocean Wise
Ocean Wise seeks a dynamic Communications Coordinator to join our team.

The Communications Coordinator will be a resource for community building within the organization and support Eco-Action Accelerator participants to develop compelling communications plans and tactics to promote and scale their service projects.

You are an up-and-coming communications professional with a love for the ocean and a yearning to help the planet.

Ocean Wise is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia with work in Canada, the United States, and Chile.

- a part-time Communications Coordinator starting in February 2023 with an end date of March 31, 2024. Extension and full-time hours _

- $18.69/hr._

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Support Eco-Action Accelerator participants in developing communications strategies and securing positive media attention for their service projects

This support will include:

Delivering a workshop to each cohort on communications planning
Providing weekly office hours to answer participant questions
Position participants as local environmental champions; contributors to protecting the environment or reconciliation and an inclusive Canada.
Increase awareness of Ocean Wise and its youth programs amongst potential participants. Particularly across diverse groups (geographical, Indigenous, and socioeconomic).
Review communications assets and ensure alignment with brand guidelines as well as inclusive, accessible, and culturally relevant language based on values of mutual respect, reciprocity, antiracism.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Creating engaging content for use on social and in Ocean Wise communications assets
Using social media scheduling tools to plan and execute posts in collaboration with the Communications and Engagement team

Media Relations

Creating media materials (press kits, image collections, backgrounders).
Developing key messages and stewarding them through approvals.
Writing and sending news releases.
Media pitching.

Writing & Editing

Writing briefing notes, backgrounders, news releases, articles, etc and stewarding them through approvals.
Curating and editing articles for the Ocean Wise blog / Ocean Wise newsletters.

General Communications Team Support

Assisting with events.
Project management support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

13 years' work experience.
A degree or diploma in communications, public relations, writing, journalism, science communications or a related field.
Work or volunteer experience at a PR/Communications firm, a notforprofit, a conservation organization, or a related organization.

Skills

Must be a strong writer with high attention to detail.
Experience with social media.
Must have excellent people skills. A proven team player with a helpful attitude.
Must thrive in a deadlinedriven environment and be able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
French speaking and writing are an asset.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel. Comfortable with new technology.

Working Conditions:

This position is based remotely.
This position is occasionally required to work in the evening and/or weekends for event(s) and social media.
