145 Queen Street includes a Community Hub where people gather and find a range of services geared to their needs

including:
housing, healthy meals, drop-in programs, mental health and justice support, harm reduction supports and
health services. It is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can access resources, become engaged, advocate
for their own community and build their lives. 145 Queen Street relies on inter-program collaboration to support the
community around accessing individualized supports. The
Food Access Peer will liaise between multiple departments to
provide community supports in meal programming. For this position, the Food Services team is seeking a passionate
individual to support a community meal program focused on providing equitable access to nutritious food for all
residents of the community. They will assist with meal preparation, meal delivery, and resource and referral sharing for
meal program participants. Fred Victor recognizes the important work that service users do daily to support their peers
with informal counselling and resource sharing and provides a platform for individuals to utilize those skills in this Peer
role.

What You Will Do

  • Greet incoming visitors and clients to the food services meal program
  • Ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances, feel welcomed and valued when
accessing food support services

  • Receives restaurant clients and other visitors to the program who may come directly to the restaurant, and
assist in connecting them to the appropriate program/department

  • Promote social connectivity in the community
  • Use own experience of accessing community programs by making referrals to tenants and community members
to Employment & Training Services and other Fred Victor programs

  • Works cooperatively with the restaurant and other Fred Victor staff, volunteers program participants and
placement students to support activities in the restaurant by providing back up support

  • Assist food services with setup, cleaning throughout service after diners leave, helps members with seating and
getting meals to tables, assisting in closing the restaurant

  • Deescalate conflict with assistance from staff when needed
  • Provide peer support to fellow peer workers to create an environment that supports growth, feedback, positive
communication, and resource sharing

  • Provide support with meal preparation and serving by mediating between food services and dropin teams
  • Assist Kitchen staff with food service, prepares restaurant space for each meal service ensuring restaurant space
is tidy and orderly at the conclusion of each meal

  • Promotes and supports community participation in forums and positive community ownership of the Restaurant
space


What You Bring to the Team

  • Use your experience to provide support and build rapport with tenants, community members, and visitors to the
community dining space participants

  • Personal experience and use of community resources and/or community food programs
  • Lived experience of homelessness, mental health, addictions, indigenous services, newcomer services, or social
assistance is considered an asset

  • Minimum oneyear experience working in a social service setting, with an emphasis on food access preferred
  • A strong knowledge of community resources and confidence to provide formal and informal referrals to tenants
and community members

  • Food Handler's Certification is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of healthy eating and basic nutrition principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of food safety guidelines
