Hiring Unit:

Position Summary:


Under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant supports the creation of content to promote Student Services activities and resources, including but not limited to social media graphics, videos, and captions, event photos, preparing analytics reports, etc., during Orientation Week and throughout the academic year.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the Communications Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Creating first drafts of graphics, reels, and other visual materials in Canva
  • Drafting written content for channels such as social media, enewsletters, websites, etc.
  • Reviewing social media analytics and preparing reports
  • Monitoring ongoing student activities and events to promote on Student Services channels
  • Collaborating with other services and departments to create materials
  • Attending weekly virtual team meetings
  • Assisting with event planning/set up & logístical/technical support for Student Services events
  • The list of functions outlined above is representative and not a complete and detailed list of tasks which may be performed by an incumbent.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Excellent oral & written communication skills in English; French an asset.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where daytoday duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0
  • Work Study Eligible Students Preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to create content for multiple channels, including social media, newsletters, websites, and more.
  • Graphic design skills an asset (Canva experience preferred)
  • Familiarity with Student Services units and functions
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated discretion in dealing with confidential information.
  • Availability to work both remotely and inperson (hybrid work)

  • Demonstrate knowledge of McGill Student Services and McGill University support mechanisms and resources.

Student staff will also:
- gain experience working in the field of student affairs/student life;
- create communications materials to promote student support offerings;
- enhance and innovate the student experience with campus-wide collaborators.
