Yonge Street Animal Hospital is a full-service veterinary hospital serving the Metropolitan Toronto area since 1937. We have enjoyed an excellent reputation that has been built by the efforts of veterinarians and staff together.


We believe that we will have the physical facilities, computer assistance and veterinary expertise to continue our success in the future.

At present, there are 4 full-time veterinarians, and an administrative staff of 18-22 including veterinary technicians, kennel staff, and receptionists.

About The Role:


A Veterinary Assistant supports the Veterinarian and other technicians in all aspects of animal care to ensure animals receive the care and attention needed during a procedure.


One of the most important Veterinary Assistant responsibilities is to ensure all areas are clean, for pets and humans alike.

Care for them properly - that's one of the most important Vet Assistant job requirements.

This includes knowledge of routine tasks, like feeding or bathing animals, but also readiness to care for injured or scared animals.


Responsibilities:


  • Feed and weigh animals.
  • Clean cages and bathe animals.
  • Ensuring treatment areas, examination rooms, hospital areas, cages, and laboratories are clean and organized.
  • Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations.
  • Soothe upset or frightened animals.
  • Observe animal behavior or health condition and report to the Veterinarian.
  • Help in cases of emergencies.
  • Keep accurate records and logs of supplies for the Hospital.
  • Complying with hospital standards, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Advise Medical Director and/or Practice Manager of any conditions that are unsafe, including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules.
  • Restock examination, treatment, xray rooms.
  • Observe patients throughout the day for signs of illness, parasites and disease control. Report any abnormalities or concerns to the veterinarian in charge or day technician.
  • Unpack deliveries, reconcile against packing slip, restock supplies.

Requirements and skills

  • Current or former pet ownership is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Patient and caring personality.
  • Ability to follow instructions properly.
  • Comfortable being around animals (cats, dogs, rodents etc.).
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lift up to 40 lbs).
  • Availability to occasionally work in emergencies.
  • High school diploma; a certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program is a plus.
