JOB SUMMARY:


Cultural and Heritage Programs is responsible for multi-disciplinary arts centres, heritage and museum facilities and structures, the delivery of arts, heritage and museum public programming and events, volunteer program development, audience development, and exhibits and research.


You are responsible for interpretive and educational program development as well as delivery at the city's historic sites and museums.

You are also responsible for ongoing work on heritage projects such as the Oral History project and historical research for educational use.

You assist with ongoing promotional activities; liaise with volunteers, community groups and facility user groups; assist in the supervision and training of summer staff; receive and direct visitors, answer public inquiries (such as genealogy research) and dispense public information; and perform reception and clerical duties as needed.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Enrolled in a university or college program in history, social sciences, museum studies, education or related discipline.


Minimum of 2 years of interpretive experience in a museum environment; and / or 2 years of experience teaching in a school environment; and / or 1 year experience in historical research and project writing.


CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES:

Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
AODA Customer Service/IASR Training


KNOWLEDGE:


  • Completion of health and safety training required by legislation and by the corporation of the City of Ottawa
  • Historical facts and information about the city of Ottawa
  • Ottawa's historical sites, museums, archives and other heritage institutions
  • Current trends in museum educational programs
  • Proper museological techniques for the handling and display of artifacts
  • Interpretive techniques
  • Ontario School curriculum
  • Client service needs
  • Project management
  • MS Office software including MS Word and MS Excel.
  • General visitor centre procedures and techniques
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and of corporate /departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety
