Durham Continuing Education is actively seeking Tutors for the 2024 Summer School Program.


Job Summary:


The DCE Summer School Tutor will work with students from Grades 9-12 to support them with summer school classes at our Summer School 2024 site - Sinclair S.S.

in Whitby - or via an online format.

Summer School tutors are employed to provide one-to-one or small group academic support.

Major Duties

There are two types of summer school tutors - in-person and online.


In-person duties:
Report to the assigned school daily for set working hours

Monitor the on-line booking system for appointments

Sit with a single student or small group of students to help them work through the classroom assigned tasks/homework.

Maintain a log of student activity to be shared with Summer School Administration

Maintain a liaison with Summer School Administration

Complete other such duties as assigned by the Principal.


On-line tutor duties:
Log in to a Google Classroom daily for set working hours

Monitor the chat function in the Google Classroom and answer inquiries

Facilitate drop-in Google Meets with a single student or small group of students to help them work through the classroom assigned tasks/homework

Maintain a log of student activity to be shared with Summer School Administration

Maintain a liaison with Summer School Administration

Complete other such duties as assigned by the Principal.

Equipment Used

A computer with video and microphone capabilities

Programs:
Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Powerpoint, Excel/Office 365/Google Meet/D2L/Padlet/Desmos/Google Classroom/Internet


Qualifications:
Successful completion at least one-year of post-secondary studies at either the College or University level.

Good communication and technology skills are required.

Computer proficiency in the Google Suite and the Microsoft Suite is required.

Experience working with students in a school environment is an asset.

Experience with e-learning or such course modes of delivery an asset.

Post-Secondary studies in Concurrent or Consecutive Education, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics is an asset.


Please note:


The class start date is July 2, 2024 and will run Monday-Friday, however, there will be training provided in late June.


The anticipated hours of work are as follows:
On-site Tutors: July 2nd - 25th - 8:15am-2:30pm

Virtual Tutors:
July 2nd - 25th - 3pm-8pm

July 29st - August 20th - 2pm-7pm

  • If you are successful, you will need to provide a Criminal Background Check/Police Check with (VSS) that is no more than 6 months old.
