ROSS RIVER SCHOOL (RRS) - Ross River

  • Home to the Kaska Dena people, Ross River school is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Kaska is the traditional language of the Kaska Dena people._
  • Ross River School is a K12 school with approximately 55 students. We are actively seeking a committed and qualified Wellness Specialist who is dedicated to living in and being an active member of the community and who can adapt well to a remote lifestyle. Our educational professionals' value authentic relationships and are committed to working with learners, families, community, local First Nation government, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Ross River._

The School Wellness Position


Reporting to the Manager of Wellbeing, and working hand in hand with the First Nation School Board, Selkirk First Nation and School Staff, the School Wellness Specialist provides a wide variety of direct supports and consultation to students, families, and school staff at Eliza Van Bibber.


The position works collaboratively with learners, families, First Nation Government, community service providers, and educators to identify learners concerns and to provide supportive services which contribute to the success of all learners.

The position plays an important role in working in partnership with the First Nation to localize and provide supports, grounded in Selkirk First Nation ways.

  • Bachelor's degree in social work or a related field
  • Experience providing Social Work services including assessments, consultation, case management, psychosocial counselling, crisis intervention and referrals
  • Experience providing support to children/youth experiencing social/emotional difficulties
  • Training in Critical Incident Stress Response/Debriefing and/or Violent Threat Risk Assessment is an asset
  • Experience working in rural settings is an asset
  • Experience working in partnership with First Nations community to localize supports is a preferred asset

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain an authentic relationship with the Kaska Dena people, community Elders, and families, promoting greater community involvement in schoolbased activities and educational programming
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to evaluate and record progress, and motivate learners
  • Solid understanding of a philosophy of inclusive education
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills to work with parents and caregivers, staff members, coaches, the First Nation School Board and other partners
  • Passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, and the community as a whole
  • Demonstrated ability to implement restorative practice and positive behavioral interventions and supports
  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective support systems to assist students (e.g., mentorship opportunities, study groups)
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to implement, developmentally responsive care and restorative practices

  • Security Clearance, including Vulnerable Sector Check Valid class 5 driver's licence
    Job Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Yukon
  • Eligible to be Registered as a Social Worker in a Canadian College of Social Workers
