The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Cash Operations co-op student/intern for the Summer and Fall 2023 work terms (May to December) to learn our daily operations, provide high-level data analytics & insights, and participate in the implementation of a large software project.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Cash Operations team is committed to the following mission:

  • To provide exceptional and proactive service to internal and external clients that adds value and allows our asset managers to focus on earning superior risk-adjusted returns for our external clients. Targeting 100% accuracy, we aim to move money to/from our clients and vendors so that funds are available as and when required. Through strategic innovation, our goal is to execute more quickly, more accurately, with less risk and/or more profitably for our clients.
  • The co-op student/intern will work under the supervision of a Cash Operations Analyst and will collaborate with the Cash Operations Analyst team (team of 5).
  • Work will primarily focus on Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting and projects, with a secondary focus on day-to-day processing and operations.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING- Work under the supervision of a Cash Operations Analyst- Develop conceptual and practical knowledge of investment operations (IO) functions within an asset management company- Gain an in-depth understanding of the cash flow and settlement cycles across different back-office functions, asset-classes, and markets- Contribute to the investment decision process by delivering reliable cash related data to portfolio managers and other functions- Work with various departments and functions including Trade Management and Accounting to resolve cash breaks- Understand the system-to-system integrations and dataflow of various transactions and identify opportunities for improvement- Assist with building and testing of an automated data reconciliation and reporting process- Participate in the Cash Capability Enhancement Project to replace our current Treasury Management System- Prepare and develop monthly Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports using PowerBI- Opportunity to effect change and introduce new ideas- Other projects, tasks and duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS- In-depth knowledge and understanding of system-to-system integrations best practices, project management frameworks, and data governance concepts- Ability to communicate technical concepts to audiences with varying levels of technical aptitude- Ability to resolve problems and deliver critical information with high degree of accuracy while working under pressure- Basic knowledge and understanding of financial instruments and asset classes- Demonstrated interest in the asset management industry, willingness to contribute to solutions and improve operations processes- Strong independent research skills combined with high attention to detail- Prior experience/training/courses in the following languages/concepts/systems (ordered by relevance to role):

  • MS SQL, SSMS
  • Python
  • MS Excel, VBA, Power Query, Power Automate
  • Power BI
  • Data Governance,
  • Project Management, Kanban, Trello, Jira
  • BPMN, UML, DFD, Visio
  • R, Data Vectorization, XML, JSON
  • Experience with emerging markets investing, commercial banking, or investment operations an asset but not required

THE DETAILS- Work term: Summer and Fall 2023 (May to December)- Department: Investment Operations-

Office Location: 750 Pandora Avenue, Victoria, BC- Spend your off hours exploring beautiful Victoria and Vancouver Island- Travel: if coming to Victoria for this work term, BCI will provide a fixed-rate travel allowance based on your location- All co-ops/internships will need to be completed in person at our Victoria office.
