JOB SUMMARY:

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) are responsible for delivering health protection programs and services in Niagara Region.

PHIs carry out public health activities required by the Ontario Public Health Standards, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA).

PHIs require a variety of professional and technical skills for conducting risk assessments, inspections, as well as investigations of health hazards.

PHIs must enforce the Ontario Protection and Promotion Act and its associated regulations; they may be required to issue tickets, summons, and to testify in court.

PHIs also provide consultative and educational services on diverse topics that affect public health, with the intention of reducing public health hazards and improving community health.


QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION:


  • A Bachelor degree in Applied Sciences or equivalent from an institution approved by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) Board of Certification.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:


  • A minimum of two years of experience as a PHI.
  • Knowledge of the Health Protection and Promotion Act and regulations thereunder, the Ontario Public Health Standards and protocols, and other legislation and guidelines.
  • Enforcement experience (including collection and documentation of evidence; issuance of orders, tickets, and or summons; preparation of legal briefs; and/or testifying in court)

SKILLS:


  • Demonstrated evidenceinformed risk assessment, investigative and problemsolving abilities
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Proficient computers skills, including familiarity with Windows, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and use of the Internet; knowledge of the Hedgehog Inspection Database is an asset
  • Proficiency in another language is an asset

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:


  • Valid certification by the CIPHI
  • A member in good standing with the CIPHI
  • A valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license and a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business
  • An ability to travel to various regional locations and able to work some evenings and weekends
  • A valid certification in Infection Control obtained by The Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. is an asset
