Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Public Works - Water & Wastewater

Regular Full-Time

Hourly Rate:
$34.38/hour - $36.04/hour

Hours of work:40 hours per week


Under general supervision of the Foreperson, you will be responsible for monitoring, operating and maintaining municipal water treatment, water distribution re-chlorination, water storage, and water pumping facilities and stations.

_What you will do in this role__:_**- Monitor process chemical inventories, process equipment performance; perform periodic preventative or unscheduled corrective maintenance to ensure proper operations.

  • Required to enter confined spaces to inspect condition of equipment or to perform maintenance.
  • Maintain buildings and grounds and exercise emergency standby power generators.
  • Monitor and evaluate water or wastewater treatment and wastewater collection process performance and make all necessary adjustments to maintain continuous compliance with Approvals and regulations under the _Sate Drinking Water Act _and the regulations under the _Ontario Water Resources Act and Nutrient Management Act._
  • Immediately report any "Permit to Take Water" or _"C _of A" exceedances to the Water or Wastewater ORO, Foreperson, Compliance Specialist and/or Supervisor.
  • Accountable for all tools. instrumentation. equipment and vehicles as assigned.
  • Perform daily circle check of assigned vehicles. Alert Supervisor of problems and damages as incurred procedures including detailed technical information required by outside contractors to troubleshoot and resolve major operating problems.
  • Perform water and/or wastewater quality testing including collection of water and wastewater samples in accordance with Region of Peel and/or regulatory standards.
  • Participate and assist with annual Ministry of the Environment facility inspections and regular Drinking Water Quality Management System (DWQMS) internal and external audits including answering technical questions regarding operational procedures and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Immediately reports regulatory compliance issues according to Region of Peel communication protocols and/or policies.
  • Report health and safety hazards. Applies safety precautions and procedures in connection with duties performed as required by WHMIS, Ministry of Transportation.
  • Ministry of the Environment regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and Occupational Health and Safety Act (Ministry of Labour); following Regional policies and procedures including the use of safety equipment and attire.
  • Execute duties in a tactful and courteous manner. Maintains neat appearance and performs duties in a way which conveys a 'positive image' of the Region.
  • Regularly responds to customer complaints and immediately troubleshoots and resolves concerns.
  • Provides general information on water and wastewater services to promote trust and confidence with the public.
  • Is required to take part in standby rotation.
  • Act as the Operator-InCharge (OIC) as designated by the Overall Responsible Operator (ORO).
  • Regularly required to provide direction to other employees or act as team leader by ensuring quality and service standards and regulatory compliance requirements are met, by providing guidance and training.

_ What the role requires__:
_**- Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent

  • Minimum MECP certifications include Wastewater Treatment Class 1 and Wastewater Collection Class
  • Minimum 2 years of industry related work experience
  • Possess a Class "G" license in good standing ("DZ" preferred)
  • Solid understanding of all relevant legislation including the Safe Drinking Water Act and Ontario Water Resources Act
  • Understanding of emergency standby power systems and handling hazardous process chemicals
  • Polished knowledge of municipal water pumping hydraulics, including water pressure management and the maintenance of drinking water quality in water storage facilities and the water distribution system
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent mentoring, coaching and training skills
