Location: 9094 Cavanagh Road (Ashton, ON)/154 Iber Road (Stittsville, ON)

Cavanagh Communities has been expanding its operations and increasing its profile over the past 20 years, and its roots are founded in Thomas Cavanagh Construction's legacy which dates to 1953 in the Greater Ottawa market.


Reporting to the Senior Controller of Cavanagh Communities and working with management and staff throughout the group of companies, oversees all financial activities of Patten Homes, Cavanagh Realty and General Contracting.

The
Controller will be responsible for all financial reporting, developing, and implementing accounting policies, systems, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to the President, Owners and Executive Team.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure personal and team compliance to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and all applicable Cavanagh Group of Companies policies through the internal Health and Safety Management System.
  • Prepare proforma budgets as required for rental properties and building construction, both internal and external projects, including potential internal rate of return calculations as needed
  • Provide leadership and support to accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll departments
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design and implementation of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Manage daily, weekly and monthly cash flow, including projecting cash needs and preparing cash flow reports
  • Collaborate with executive team and partners to ensure efficient and effective organizational operations
  • Ensure compliance with all accounting, legal and regulatory requirements
  • Analyze and prepare internal and external financial statements, including supporting documentation and monthly accruals
  • Review contracts, agreements and other legal documents, and make recommendations as required.
  • Provide management with information vital to the decisionmaking process, including financial results, ad hoc reporting and key financial models
  • Evaluate accounting and internal control systems, and implement new or improved processes where needed
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of business performance metrics
  • Oversee regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance
  • Manage relationships with financial institutions and advisors that conduct business with Cavanagh Communities
  • Secure funding with favourable terms for assets and projects as required, in coordination with other finance staff
  • Work with various external advisors to oversee the annual audit, insurance renewal process, property tax appeals, etc.
  • Monitor compliance of financial covenants
  • Additional duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years in a progressive accounting role, preferably as a Controller
  • Directly related experience in the Construction and Property Management industries
  • Vista, Yardi or ECI/MarkSystems experience an asset
  • BComm or equivalent from an accredited Canadian institution
  • CPA preferred
  • Ability and willingness to meet businesscritical deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Outstanding technology, analytics and management experience required
  • Seizes opportunities to produce results without direct supervision
  • Budget forecasting experience required
  • Proven ability to confidently lead, mentor and delegate to a team while developing and maintaining strong client relations
  • Flexibility to handle responsibilities beyond formal job duties
