FOR EARLY LEARNING CLASSROOMS TO GRADE 3
CONTRACT
Job Summary:
To foster a community interest in the need to retain and revitalize the Anishinaabemowin language in the classrooms.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use Anishinaabemowin with students and staff throughout the day in the classroom and school.
- Will be assigned to support classroom teacher and their class each day.
- Coplan Anishinaabe cultural activities with the assigned classroom teacher. Classroom teacher will connect these cultural activities to Science, Social Studies and potentially Mathematics curriculum expectations.
- Model and mentor Anishinaabemowin with the assigned classroom teacher to indirectly improve teacher acquisition of Anishinaabemowin.
- Collaborate with the Biidaaban Cultural/Elders Coordinator to invite community Elders and Knowledge Keepers to be a part of the learning and with Zagamok Wasseyaankaan Teg for resources
- May be asked to connect with community agencies (Lands, Resources and Environment, Community Wellness, community Knowledge Keepers, etc.) to coordinate learning during some of these classes.
- Advise on the ordering of necessary resources for lessons (i.e. Anishinaabe medicines, cultural activity resources)
- Participate in all Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik professional development opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Fluency in Anishnaabemowin is required
- Knowledge and appreciation of Anishinaabe Culture, History and Anishinaabe Teachings.
- Landbased learning skills are an asset.
- Personal attributes of persistency, professional work ethics, professional etiquette and good motivational skills to develop positive rapport and promote role modeling within the community.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with policies established by Sagamok Anishnawbek.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and problem solving skills.
- Knowledge of the Quality Assurance System/Quality Management Process
- Knowledge of the Community Development Process.
- Ojibway language, knowledge and appreciation of Native Culture and Heritage are considered definite assets.
- Must be able to work as a team member and at times with minimum supervision.
