The Township of Langley is recruiting for a temporary full-time Collection Assistant (from approx. July 31, 2023 to March 29, 2024) to join our team of professionals in the Arts, Culture and Community Initiatives Division.Reporting to the Cultural Services Manager, in this unionized position you will work as part of the curatorial team to care for and provide access to the museum's art, artifact and archive collections.
This position will assist in the transition of the Township's artifacts collection to the new cultural centre, Salishan Place by the River, located in the heritage district of Fort Langley.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the research, acquisition, registration, classification and deaccessioning of museum artifacts, art, and literature collections
Assist in receiving, checking, reporting and preparing museum items, and participate in the development of special exhibitions, showings and events
Prepare museum exhibits/specimens for storage, inventory, and conservation
Respond to requests from the public for information concerning art, artifacts and archival materials and facilitate public/researcher access to archival materials
Perform related work as required
Qualifications:
Completion of a university degree in a related field plus some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Sound knowledge of the principles, practices, philosophy and objectives to museums, art galleries, archives, and heritage conservation
Sound knowledge of the established standards for arranging, describing, and indexing archival materials
Ability to handle, classify, research, and catalogue a variety of artifacts, art works and archival materials
Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts and provide assistance to the public in an effective and courteous manner
Previous museum experience is considered an asset
The CUPE rate of pay for this position is $ $39.17 per hour (5 steps, 2023 rates) plus 13.5% in lieu of benefits.
