About Open Door Group's Thrive Program:

It is an innovative program that offers opportunities for individuals living with a mental health condition to participate in programming to develop skills, improve health and wellness and to support active inclusion in their communities.


The partnership between the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Open Door Group has enabled this unique program to promote healthy living, community inclusion and life skills development through learning, as a way to maintain mental wellness.


The THRIVE Youth Summer Program provides health and wellness opportunities for young adults who experience mental illness and/or substance use issues.


Position Overview:


In this role, the Peer Recreation Activity Worker will have the opportunity to co-facilitate Youth Summer Session Programs and other adult recreation programs.

The primary responsibility will be to support and engage participants in various recreational activities, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.

Reporting to the Thrive Program Coordinator, the Peer Recreation Activity Worker will work the team of recreation therapists and disability of employment specialists.


Primary Responsibilities:

This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Support the coordination of the annual Thrive Youth Summer Session Program
  • Assist staff with workshops related to healthy living, adventure therapy, artist workshops, community participation and life skills development
  • Organizing supplies related to summer activities
  • Support program participants attending the Thrive Summer Session program
  • Complete pre and post evaluations of the program with participants
  • Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as statistics, progress reports, activity participation reports, observation reports, and client activity profiles
  • Assisting with other Thrive programs as required
  • Write a report based on observations and recommendations for next year

Education, Training, and Experience:


  • Have personal experience with a mental health condition.
  • Grade 12 minimum.
  • Certificates in First Aid
  • Recent, related experience of one year in a mental health setting or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Or other Qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work.
  • Be between 1930 years of age
  • Be registered as a fulltime student in the previous academic year and returning to school on a fulltime basis in the next academic year. (Completing studies in an activity assistant/worker program or recreationrelated education an asset)
  • As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Open Door Group must be fully vaccinated for COVID19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principles
  • Peer Support worker training is an asset
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Ability to operate related equipment including use of computer
  • Ability to organize and prioritize
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients
  • Ability to instruct various programs and practice good leadership skills
