Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager of Communications & Public Relations develops and implements institutional communications and public relations plans for Sheridan and oversees the effectiveness of the communications team.

Working collaboratively with the broader communications, public affairs and marketing team, the Manager of Communications & Public Relations helps ensure the department is an effective, collaborative partner to the administrative and faculty teams across the college.

This opportunity requires a highly competent leader and a well-rounded, senior public relations practitioner. This role has management oversight of a team of public relations practitioners.


The incumbent serves as editor-in-chief of Sheridan's branded newsroom - an online vehicle intended to promote Sheridan stories to journalists and influencers and connect us more effectively with industry and community partners.

They also contribute to the continued evolution of the Sheridan Central portal to help ensure engagement among current students and employees.

What You'll be Doing


Developing, implementing and evaluating strategic communications and public relations project plans that encompass the vision, activities and promotional objectives of Sheridan.


Developing, guiding and empowering a diverse and highly capable team through effective hiring, supervision, coaching, mentoring, workflow/goal setting and ongoing performance management.

Guiding internal clients in the development of strategic, effective communication strategies for their areas.


In collaboration with the Director, leading a PR and Communications function responsible for the development, implementation and measurement of a proactive media relations strategy for Sheridan.


Developing and executing media relations plans to support Sheridan's annual cycle of recruitment and programming, and to supporting periodic short or long-term initiatives.

Managing Sheridan's branded newsroom and working to cultivate Sheridan media experts.


Planning, developing & coordinating policies and procedures with respect to media; writing, editing and producing a wide variety of communications and visual content that aligns with overarching brand positioning and messaging strategy for publication on Sheridan's social channels, website and branded newsroom.

In consultation with the Director, developing, directing, monitoring and adapting the department budget.

Accountability for resource stewardship, policies, procedures & compliance; adhering to legal/policy directives.

Performing other related projects, duties and initiatives, as assigned.

About You


You bring demonstrated success in the development and execution of strategic communications designed to support organizational goals, and media relations including media pitches that generate coverage.


You have a proven track record of providing experience-based, judgement-driven advice, support and coaching to leaders and employees that help the organization achieve its objectives.


You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion.


You have experience managing staff and leading teams with the ability to coach, motivate employees, and create the conditions necessary for success.


You can conceptualize strategies and develop, implement and measure programs in support of organizational goals with a demonstrated critical thinking and issues management skills.

4-year degree in Public Relations, Communications, Business, Liberal Arts, Journalism or related field

5 years of sound experience in communications and public relations (Equivalency will be considered)

Successful experience leading teams

Course work or certificates in corporate communications

Familiarity with media monitoring tools, e.g. Cision.

Training in web analytics (asset)

Understanding of accessibility issues (AODA)

Understanding of privacy and crisis communication escalation procedures
