The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is responsible for the production, marketing, processing and merchandising of agriculture and aquaculture products, food security, and supporting enhancement of wild fish populations.


The Ministry's Extension and Support Service Branch identifies and promotes agriculture and food production/ processing systems that are sustainable and enhance the economic benefits to the province.

The Resource Management Unit (RMU) is in the Ministry's Extension and Support Services Branch. The RMU provides a trusted source of expert advice and information about on-farm climate action and environmental sustainability.

The RMU leads the development of information and services for the agriculture sector to mitigate risks to the farm from a changing climate and environment and from the farm to the environment (soil, water, air (greenhouse gas emissions), and biodiversity resources).


Working out of the Resource Management Unit, the Soil Carbon Agrologist provides senior professional advisory services, including providing direction to others, with a strong focus on how agroecological processes and beneficial management practices affect soil health, greenhouse gas mitigation and carbon sequestration.

The Soil Carbon Agrologist advises, leads, and supports research and extension projects related to sustainable soil management, including strategies for improving soil health, mitigating GHG emissions and sequestering carbon.

This position contributes to knowledge transfer to support industry adoption of practices that will improve resiliency and overall sustainability of British Columbia's agricultural sector.


Job Requirements:


  • Degree in the natural resource field (i.e. agriculture, agroecology, soil, plant, or crop science, ecological restoration or conservation biology) or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association.
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists. Immediately eligible to register means you are currently a fully licensed Registered Professional Agrologist member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the relevant BC association.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have minimum 3 years' related experience in the areas of soil management (carbon sequestration and GHG mitigation), agriculture, agroecology, plant ecology, and/or conservation biology.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience working in British Columbia's agricultural sector addressing related climate change challenges.

  • Valid B.C. driver's license or equivalent.

About this Position:


This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Agriculture and Food offices: Abbotsford, Victoria, Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
