Job Summary:


Resumes are being accepted for the part time position of Community Stewardship Coordinator with the Parks Operation and Forestry department.

Reporting to the Program Manager of Forestry and Sustainable Landscape, this position will focus on engaging the community on public lands including natural areas stewardship, and community gardening.


The position will engage community groups and volunteers to deliver outreach and stewardship initiatives in support of the Urban Forestry Management Plan, Natural Heritage Action Plan, and Trails Master Plan and manage the community gardens and park stewards programs.


Hours of Work:


This is a part time position working up to 20 hours per week with the requirement of a flexible schedule to work evenings and weekends when required.


Your role:


  • Assist in developing and implementing the Parks Operations and Forestry community stewardship program. Attract and retain volunteers for stewardship activities.
  • Liaise with and support neighbourhood groups, outside agencies, and service partners in the delivery of community stewardship programming. This may include supporting and recognizing volunteers and securing grants and sponsors.
  • Support Guelph's status as a Bee City.
  • Liaise, coordinate, and secure the support other City staff to provide resources and expertise to Community Stewardship programs.
  • Support the organization of community events with environmental themes geared for volunteer participation (e.g., tree plantings, boardwalk building, and community cleanups).
  • Facilitate public participation in the maintenance and enhancement of the urban forest and broader natural areas.
  • Implement all aspects of the Community Gardens and park stewards programs.
  • Assess interest in new community stewardship and community garden projects consistent with the City's Community Engagement Framework.
  • Compile draft project plans and program statistics and prepare evaluation of the community stewardship and community gardens program annually.
  • Maintain the Community Garden Policy.
  • Provide leadership to the Community Gardens Working Group including chairing monthly meetings.
  • Promote community stewardship and community gardens including representing these programs at community events, updating the website, and developing communications materials related to naturalization and parks stewardship programming.
  • Provide excellent customer service while responding to program related inquiries, complaints, and suggestions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Effective communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel). Experience using ESRI/GIS mapping software an asset.
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of naturalization and ecological restoration and enhancement, and experience working in the field, native plant identification and related field skills an asset.
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal environmental legislation, acts, regulations, bylaws, and policies such as the Municipal Act, Ontario Pesticide Act, Invasive Species Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act and City of Guelph policies.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, complete multiple task assignments and function effectively in a highvolume workplace with time restraints.
  • Ability to deal effectively with contentious situations and to exercise discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with and support Parks Operations and Forestry, staff, agencies and the community to achieve superior results and promote the service first philosophy of the City.
  • Excellent leadership and facilitation skills.

Rate:

$ $24.62 per hour
