Position Summary


Reporting to the Director, Communications and Strategic Initiatives, the _Communications and Events Officer _will be a versatile contributor to the Office of the President and Vice-chancellor.

The Communications and Events Officer will be responsible for developing and executing marketing activities, and preparing and maintaining a dashboard to track presidential and strategic communications activities, coordinating sponsorship and event opportunities, and more.


The Communications and Events Officer will support the overall presidential communications strategy and will work on strategic communications initiatives with highly confidential and sensitive matters involving the Office of the President and Cabinet, including labour relations and staffing matters.

The position includes responsibilities for reviewing/preparing responses to sensitive correspondence; writing key messages, public statements, and news releases; assisting with the development of issues management and crisis communications plans; information gathering and research; assisting the social media function; media and social media monitoring and reporting; and working with senior leadership, the Board of Governors, Senate, faculty and colleagues across the university.

The position will also be responsible for executing the communications strategy in support of the institutional strategic plan, to foster internal engagement with strategic priorities.


The position will also provide support to internal events, including assisting with senior leadership retreats, Convocation and presidential engagement activities such as Town Halls.


Accountabilities

Event Planning

  • Works in collaboration with the Director, Communications and Strategic Initiatives, to establish event, sponsorship and partnership opportunities for the president
  • Provides protocol, planning, coordination and onsite support for high profile events
  • Acts as liaison with communications, events and marketing colleagues across the institution
  • Plans and executes strategic institutional events to activate presidential and institutional priorities, internally and externally
  • Supports execution of community events on campus and works collaboratively with internal stakeholders (integrated communications, media relations, alumni relations etc.) and external stakeholders (industry, colleague PSE institutions, not for profit organizations, etc.)
  • Works with vendors, suppliers and other external service providers to support events
  • Responsible for maintaining a presidential event distribution list for all events
  • Responsible for distributing invitations and tracking engagement metrics related to events

Marketing and Communications

  • Responsible for monitoring social media and other postsecondary institutions as they relate to the institution and postsecondary sector
  • Plays an active role in communication planning and strategy around the institutional strategic plan, the president's communications, and executive leadership communications
  • Works closely with the communications officer in the office of the provost and vicepresident: academic to develop longterm communications objectives and goals that further strategic priorities of the university
  • Provides communications support to confidential issues including matters related to personnel, labour relatio
