The BC SPCA is looking for a talented and enthusiastic team player who is passionate about social media, content creation and animal welfare.

This position is responsible for all social media channels of the BC SPCA and works in collaboration with the Communications team and other departments to support the strategic growth and success of the Society through digital channels with a focus on social media.

You embrace digital culture, the internet and emerging technologies and recognize their value and reach.

You are excited and passionate about using social media as a means of communicating with online audiences and have a deep understanding of what motivates people to engage with various social medial platforms.


You keep up-to-date with the latest trends and changes in social media, including video and written content and the measurement and analysis of these tactics.

This position demands an exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational, creative and interpersonal skills.


Some specific duties:


  • In conjunction with the Chief Communications Officer and the Manager, Digital Strategy and Social Media Specialist provides input into the strategic direction of the society's digital communications.
  • Monitors trends in social media for nonprofit organizations and more broadly to incorporate new approaches, platforms and tactics to meet the Society's strategic goals.
  • Supports the management of the social media calendar (alongside SM Specialist) to make sure content is scheduled and organized with the BC SPCA marketing calendar.
  • Comanages the BC SPCA social media interactions with supporters on our main channels inbox (Facebook, Tiktok, Twitter, Instagram) supporting the customer service model of the society.
  • Schedules daily content on all channels, shared with SM Specialist, working with departments on campaign dates and Comms team on news items, releases etc.
  • Manage the content development calendar, schedule and project manage timelines.
  • Search, discover and develop tactical stories from BC SPCA animal centres, volunteer networks, internal departments and online community groups.
  • Create content, capturing both written, video and photo and strategically utilizing it for the appropriate channel. (ie. Instagram stories/posts, Tiktok, Facebook, website)
  • Produce written content as required for website, enewsletters and news releases.
  • Edit existing BC SPCA content, build brainstorm sessions for new content ideas utilizing topics of interest from the BC SPCA online community.
  • Visit lower mainland BC SPCA Animal Centres to interact with staff and animals to capture content, while following protocols in place.
  • Supports BC SPCA departments and programs (along with SM Specialist) with campaigns, promotions and messaging on social media, specifically in the area of content creation and community engagement.
  • Train and support BC SPCA Animal Centres on social media monitoring, campaign posting and content development.
  • With the social media team, provide monthly reporting and learnings on social media marketing tactics, engagement, traffic to site, community growths and outcomes of top content.
Oversee volunteer resources to support social media activities.


Qualifications you need to have:


  • Postsecondary education in social media marketing or related field plus a minimum of three (3) years' related experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience acceptable to the Employer
  • Highly experienced and passionate about content creation, both written and image (photo/video) for web and social channels.
  • Excellent social media skills and a history of active participation experience in social networking channels, mainly: Facebook, Tiktok and Instagram (Twitter, Youtube, Linkedin)
  • Experience utilizing social media management tools, (Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Later)
  • Excellent online customer service skills and experience managing brand voice online: personable, engaging, and respectful of a diverse audience, able to project the BC SPCA's personality through online channels
  • Experience writing for web and news media items; the ability to track down stories through internal and external contacts, gather content (photo/video) and edit to publish.
  • High level of experience in digital photography, video editing and videography.
  • Strong digital design skills; creative flair, originality and a strong visual sense with experience using Canva or other creative editing tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong project management and time management skills demonstrated in your ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Able to take initiative, but accepting of
