Garbage Collector (Parks)/Equipment Operator - Grade I:

What You Will Get To Do-Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations (Parks), and under the direction of the Working Foreperson, from April to November the Garbage Collector (Parks) is responsible for refuse collection from Parks and Town properties.


Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
- operation and daily maintenance on all applicable equipment and/or vehicles, including trucks over 11,000 kg., G.V.W.;
- collection and emptying of all waste from receptacles and in-ground waste containers, including operation of a 0-8 ton crane;
- general litter and debris pick up;
- conducting visual inspections of properties, logging vandalism, safety concerns and/or general deficiencies, and reporting accurate information back to the appropriate Working Foreperson; and,
- other duties as required and/or assigned.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations (Roads), and under the direction of the Working Foreperson, from November to April the Equipment Operator - Grade I responsibilities include:

  • operating and maintaining vehicles over 11,000 kg., G.V.W., including single and tandem axle vehicles, and accessory equipment;
- loading, hauling and unloading of various materials and supplies;
- operating all vehicles and/or equipment skilfully and safely;
- involvement in winter snow operations, including snow removal, sanding/salting and ploughing of roads and sidewalks;
- involvement in other road work, including sweeping, shouldering, patching, repairing washouts, maintenance, resurfacing and ditching;
- other duties as required and assigned.

What You Bring To Our Team

  • As the successful applicant, you must possess:
  • secondary school graduation diploma;
- hold and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License in good standing and qualify for the Town's Safe Driver Program criteria;
- a valid CPR and First Aid certification;
- a valid 0-8 ton crane operator certification;
- a minimum of one (1) year experience operating vehicles over 11,000 kg., G.V.W., including tandem axle trucks;
- a minimum of one (1) year directly related experience in parks/parks maintenance;
- the ability to operate various tools and equipment;
- the physical fitness and capability of performing strenuous physical labour with heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. in varying weather conditions;
- successful completion of Defensive Driving training; and
- the ability to work after hours for winter control and emergency situations.
