    Position Summary:


For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia's leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.


The Ocean Technology Camp Leader will plan and facilitate engaging hand-on learning activities, games, field trips, and special guest appearances to expose students ages 9-12 to the booming ocean technology sector and potential career pathways.


The Ocean Tech Camp Leader will bring their knowledge of the marine sector, their energy, enthusiasm, and exceptional communication skills to engage to inspire youth in a classroom setting on a daily basis.

The position provides experience working in a team setting, training staff, managing a budget, coordinating and delivering educational and recreational programs, building relationships with local community organizations, developing communication and leadership skills, and supervising youth.


Description of Tasks:

The Ocean Technology Camp Leader works in the Science Education department and reports to the Manager of Science Education.

The primary tasks of the position are:

  • Working with an Ocean Tech Camp Counsellor and Science Educator to plan and develop a series of handson camp activities and games centered around the appreciation for our oceans, the technology used in the marine sector, and career pathways in Ocean Science
  • Training and working collaboratively with an Ocean Tech Camp Counsellor in presenting activities and games for 1522 youth ages 912 in a classroom and science centre/ museum setting
  • Providing guidance and direction to the Ocean Tech Camp Counsellor and delegating daily tasks to the counsellor as needed to ensure smooth camp delivery from activity prep, to camp facilitation, to cleanup
  • Coordinating/purchasing supplies, working within the program budget
  • Organizing and maintaining camper records, ensuring privacy and confidentiality
  • Preparing summary reports on each camp week and a final report on the program
  • Liaising with parents or guardians to ensure campers needs are met and any disciplinary issues are addressed
  • Assisting, as needed, with Camp promotional activities
  • Supporting daily camp sign in/out processes as needed
  • Supporting other Discovery Centre camp groups with classroom support in the event of camp staff absences

Qualifications:


Education:
Post-secondary studies in marine biology, environmental studies or sustainability, or a related discipline

Experience:
Experience in child supervision, preferably in an educational, recreational, museum or camp setting; experience in preparing and presenting workshops an asset; experience with technology used in the marine sector would be a strong asset

Language Requirements:
Fluency in English is required; additional languages (especially French) considered an asset

Eligibility:
Applicants must qualify for SKILL or the Student Work Placement Program in order to be considered. A full commitment to the employment dates is also required (May 20-August 30, 2024).


Measurable Outcomes:


The Ocean Technology Camp Leader will:

  • Successfully lead the development, planning, rehearsal, and delivery of workshops, field trips, games, and activities for children ages 5-12 in a museum/science centre environment
  • Provide direction and training to Camp Counsellors to ensure success in their roles
  • Manage camp funds and ensure all supplies are purchased while keeping within the budget
  • Provide a safe and positive experience for all campers, using feedback from campers and their guardians to measure success and make improvements
  • Make recommendations for future camp activities based on an end of season report and daily journals of events
