Compensation Range

$6, $10,433.50 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Description Summary


The Safety Advisor, Field Safety is responsible for the development, promotion and implementation of a comprehensive, UBC-wide program for University field research activities, to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and best practices in providing duty of care for those participating these activities.

This role will be devoted to the development of field safety programming and for providing institutional support and functions for Field Research Safety, including the genesis and ongoing support of an advisory body to provide guidance on institutional field safety practices.


The Safety Advisor, Field Safety works to ensure field safety programming is coherent with related UBC practices and policies including but not limited to insurance, travel, transport, scientific diving, first aid, animal welfare and stewardship of hazardous substances.


In this role, the incumbent is responsible for research community engagement activities, strategic and operational planning activities, performance measurement activities, and developing training programs if and where needed based on UBC Policies, regulatory standards and guidelines, and best practices.


The Field Safety Advisor engages with heads and senior managers in academic and administrative departments to develop, establish and implement institutional standards on safety for field research.

The Advisor works to engage and advise researchers, technical personnel and others on acceptable field safety procedures, practices and programs.

The Field Safety Advisor prepares reports on activities, issues of non-compliance or on other program areas that may be required by the Manager Research Compliance & Occupational Hygiene and/or any institutional body formed to establish standards of practice for Field Safety.


The incumbent also acts as a resource for UBC departments regarding applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations and UBC policies, as they pertain to field safety and supports University departments in complying with these criteria.

Organizational Status


This position reports to the Manager - Research Compliance & Occupational Hygiene and works closely with the University Field Research Community on health & safety planning.

The incumbent will represent the University with external agencies including WorkSafeBC, Transport Canada and colleagues in health & safety from other institutions.

Work Performed- Develops, implements and audits UBC's Field Safety Program for designing, implementing and consulting on institution-wide UBC field safety program-related training, risk assessment processes and program related communications as needed;- Responsible for providing safety support and review of UBC research proposals for field research operations;- Responsible for liaising between the field research community, HSE (Okanagan) and SRS (Vancouver) as needed to support Health & Safety operations and initiatives, including training needs assessments;- Provides guidance, support and advice to departmental and faculty leadership regarding best practices and procedures in regard to health and safety matters for field locations;- Responsible for participating in and reviewing incident investigation reports;- Responsible for supporting UBC Safety, Ethics and Compliance Committees, and in particular any advisory bodies formed to address the needs of field research, on topics as assigned;- Responsible for liaising with external agencies (including but not limited to WorkSafeBC and Transport Canada) and bodies to ensure compliance;- Responsible for cross-training and supervising selected SRS personnel in relevant aspects of fie
