The
Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO), under the auspices of the Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, has a broad and proactive mandate to work with campus and community partners to promote, develop, coordinate and support initiatives which build individual and organizational capacity to advance equity, diversity and inclusion goals, and to foster a culture of openness, respect, fairness, and inclusion.

The EIO reaches out to and engages diverse communities in awareness-raising, prevention education and training activities, promotes and supports community efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusion, supports community members who have experienced sexual violence, and facilitates the resolution of community complaints of harassment and discrimination, including failure to reasonably accommodate, on the basis of any human rights protected grounds.

The Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion is the senior-most leader responsible for mobilizing strategic actions to promote inclusive excellence in teaching, research, service, and governance.


Job Summary:


Reporting to the
Manager, Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Programs, the Coordinator organizes broad awareness-raising initiatives and delivering targeting training programs to promote inclusion and anti-racism.

In particular, the Coordinator will design and deliver programming to enhance critical race consciousness and build campus community capacity to address anti-Black racism.

The Coordinator will partner and advise campus groups to create events and initiatives which aim to improve the sense of belonging, increase opportunities for networking, and promote thriving among Black/African students, faculty and staff.

The Coordinator will create and collaborate on designing and delivery of a suite of educational offerings that look to educate University members on the foundations of anti-Black racism and contextualize trainings to higher education contexts.

The coordinator acts as a support and liaison, connecting racialized and Black/African community members with additional resources and services within the EIO or other campus offices.

The Coordinator further collaborates with the Inclusion and Anti-Racism Manager, to inform broader educational priorities and opportunities.


Education and Training Accountabilities:


  • Using an intersectional and anti-oppressive teaching and learning framework, assist the Manager of Inclusion and Anti-Racism in designing and delivering education and training programs that address fundamental and foundational inclusion and anti-racism topics, specifically, Equity, diversity, Inclusion Fundamentals, Foundations of Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppressive Practice, Unconscious Bias Training, and Allyship Principles;
  • Lead the development and facilitation of anti-Black Racism progressive educational programming and training across a suite of topics that contextualize anti-Black Racism in society and higher education (ie. History of anti-Black racism, systemic anti-Black Racism, Anti-Black racism in recruitment and retention, cultural appropriation, inclusive language for Black communities, Allyship with Black communities, colonialism, and intersectional topics with a focus on Black identity);
  • Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Human Resources, Residence Life, Student Success Centre Orientation and Transition, Athletics, etc.) to plan and deliver cross-unit anti-racism and anti-Black racism content for education and training activities on an annual basis (e.g., Welcome Week McMaster Student Union Training, Archway and Residence Life Training, New Employee Orientations, Anti-Racism Symposium with Athletics and Recreation, etc.);
  • Keep abreast of race-related campus and social issues, movement and advocacy groups (e.g., Black Lives Matter, BlackNorth, etc.) and their implications for programming, campus safety, and front facing communications;
  • Collaborate with EIO colleagues on the design and delivery of intersectional programming, including topics such as disability justice, Afro-Indigenous coalition-building, Black masculinities, Queerness and Blackness, for instance;
  • Assist Manager of Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Programming in sharing best practices as they relate to anti-Black racism education and programming via attendance and contributions to EDI Network Meetings.

Events and Initiatives Accountabilities:


  • With the Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Program team, plan and organize awareness-raising campaigns, educational events (e.g., annual symposia, guest lectures, Welcome Week engaging programming) to build campus engagement and awareness of Equity and Inclusion Office and to build campus capacity to address various forms of anti-racism;
  • Work with partners (e.g. MacPherson Institute, African and Caribbean diaspora Studies, African and Caribbean Faculty Association of McMaster, Black Student Success Centre etc) to identify and implement initiatives that reflect
