Your Opportunity:


As Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide front line support for general laboratory operations and perform duties including performing blood collections on neonate, pediatric and adult patients using various phlebotomy techniques; receiving, sorting, and evaluating specimens; performing accurate data entry according to standard operating procedures; specimen processing and handling; and sending and transferring samples to testing locations.

You will work in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, and dynamic tertiary hospital and expected to interpret workflow visuals and meet required turnaround times with strong attention to detail.

You will provide customer service to patients and clients and will actively collaborate with AHS physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

You will plan and organize your work responsibilities and processes to perform standard and specialized procedures. You will use your knowledge to participate in safety, quality control functions and quality improvement activities.

In addition, work process is carried out not only with staff and patient safety as a priority but as well a high regard for professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy and confidentiality of information related to patients, staff, and the business of APL.

In this role you will have the opportunity to utilize your excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, while working both independently and as part of a team.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner.

You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Competency in phlebotomy within the last 6 months. May be required to pass a phlebotomy skills challenge to the satisfaction of APL. Competency and experience in neonatal skin puncture collection within the last 6 months. Pediatric venipuncture experience within the last year. Training and experience using EPIC within the last year. Data Entry experience using EPIC within the last year. Maybe required to pass keyboarding skills challenge. Experience in performing specimen reception bench, specimen processing and handling, and send out bench within the last year. Experience in OP lab one-patient flow process within the last year. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Windows based programs. Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and customer service skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

Phlebotomy experience in a Calgary high volume urban hospital Pre-Analytics department within the last year. CPR, Dispatch Bench or Team Lead experience preferred. Experience interpreting workflow visuals and ability to respond to meet turnaround times. Certificate or training on professional and leadership development. Certificate or training on process improvement/change management. TDG, IATA, WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certification.
