What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:
- plan and conduct in-depth desk audits of taxpayer returns and refund claims of simple-to-moderate complexity
- organize your own activities to conduct and complete audits and special projects within expected time frames
- develop the audit approach, decide on the type and extent of audit tests, negotiate and establish plans of action to gain filing compliance from taxpayers
- protect confidential and sensitive taxpayer information
- be accountable for the accuracy and thoroughness of the audit
- conduct field audit work when required
How do I qualify?:
Mandatory:
You have obtained the following accreditation:
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)
Program:
Successful completion of Modules 1 through 6 of the CPA Prep program; or
- Certified General Accountant (CGA)
Program:
Successful completion of Levels 1 and 2; or
- Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
Program:
Successful completion of 6 courses at the Pre-Professional level, including 3 accounting courses; or
- Academic Equivalent: Successful completion of 6 courses of a recognized university/community college program plus or including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting and Intermediate Financial Accounting.
For the bilingual vacancy:
You must possess oral French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.
Technical Knowledge:
- You have knowledge of the principles and practices of auditing, financial statement analysis, and accounting principles, systems and procedures
- You can plan audits and reviews, determine the audit approach, sampling techniques, sample sizes and depth of audit, access and review information sources, and recommend reassessment or referral for enforcement
- You can gain knowledge of relevant Ontario tax legislation (Acts and Regulations), and interjurisdictional agreements
- You can gain knowledge of ministry and branch rulings, directives, guidelines and administrative policies and practices
- You can gain knowledge of ministryapproved systems (e.g. OntTax), relevant internal and external databases, and desktop software
Research and Analytical Skills:
- You have proven research, analytical and investigative skills, to analyze documents and business records to determine tax liabilities, perform audits, evaluate results, identify and resolve compliance problems, and participate in projects to identify noncompliance
- You can effectively synthesize data and information from a number of sources including financial statements and related schedules, calculations, reported tax return liabilities and assessment notices
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- You have effective oral and written communication skills to deal effectively with others, prepare correspondence and audit working papers, and draft audit and operational improvement reports
- You have proven interpersonal skills to manage the audit relationship and deal with taxpayers in a sensitive and professional manner
Project Management Skills:
- You have demonstrated project management skills to lead teams within the section
