Casual, part-time contract, half day rate of $77.60 and a daily rate of $155.25.

What you offer?


Reporting to the Camp Director, the Otonabee Summer Wilderness Guide implements and facilitates the delivery of quality recreational programs, services and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled at Camp Otonabee.

The Wilderness Guide ensures that children and youth have a positive experience leading to personal growth through fun and rewarding recreation in the backcountry.

This position fosters self-esteem as well as problem solving and conflict resolution skills in program participants, while working to create an atmosphere of safety, belonging and positive development in accordance with Y policies and procedures.


The Wilderness Guide presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and ensures excellent customer service is provided to members and participants by proactively addressing concerns or issues and escalating them to the Camp Director, as necessary.

This position ensures that health and safety regulations and YMCA-YWCA policies and procedures are upheld.

The Wilderness Guide adheres to and ensures that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region are conveyed to members, staff and volunteers with every interaction.


The Wilderness Guide will be responsible for the setup, take down and supervision of program areas while in the back-country and onsite at Camp Otonabee.

The Wilderness Guide will function as a team member and will lead program delivery for a group of campers.


Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Function as a team member and will lead program delivery for a group of campers
- position ensures that health and safety regulations and YMCA policies and procedures are upheld.

  • Perform some housekeeping responsibilities sanitation of equipment, cleaning program areas, etc.
  • Assist in set up and take down of program areas and equipment while in the backcountry and at Camp Otonabee
  • Participate in swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, horsebackriding and other activities

  • Ability to work in English
  • Bilingualism an asset

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Current National Lifeguard Certification and/or Bronze Cross
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR "C" certification
  • Paddle Canada, Swift Water Rescue, or other relevant certifications are strongly considered as assets for this position
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship building skills
  • Ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff and volunteers
