Position Summary:


McAsphalt's successful business model for several decades has relied upon high performance truck transportation services for delivery of our Asphalt and Emulsion products to customers and raw materials to our production plants across Western Canada.

Trucking is in our DNA and core to our culture of service excellence.


The Operations Manager is responsible and accountable for the general management and optimal deployment of tractor and tank
trailer assets within McAsphalt's fleet in Western Canada.


The incumbent will also be responsible for safely servicing the logistics needs of our production plants and customers across Western Canada.

The Operations Manager, West will manage the Western Dispatch team and the Western Drivers to ensure trucking transportation services are safe, reliable, efficient and profitable.


Main Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Directly supervises daytoday work of dispatchers and drivers while directing activities related to the dispatch, routing, and location of the Western fleet;
  • Oversees the vehicle maintenance plan and coordinates with the Maintenance Department to ensure fleet availability to meet service needs;
  • Drive profitability through strategic cost management, and new business development
  • Monitor operations to ensure staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, security rules, and government regulations;
  • Assist Safety Department to ensure investigations are carried out in cooperation with government agencies to determine the causes of transport accidents and to improve safety procedures;
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Maintain vehicle registration files within Accutrack;
  • Assist Regional Manager with Capex purchases of all new equipment, and prepare business cases for management;
  • Coordinate with Safety and Dispatch Groups to ensure drivers are available for appropriate training and manage training schedules;
  • Participate in all emergency situations, accidents and spills;
  • Forecast volumes and equipment needs weekly, monthly, annually and assist in budget planning;
  • Assist Regional Manager with internal and external audits and review recommendations with management;
  • Develop and review monthly performance KPIs and update Regional Manager of on potential vendor budgetary exceptions.

Required Qualifications:


  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience is required;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation and dispatch is required;
  • Detailed knowledge of all relevant Provincial and Transport Canada regulations governing the road transportation business, such as authorized hours of work, TDG regulations, MTO and US DOT requirements and standards of compliance;
  • Transborder experience and knowledge of clearance protocols;
  • Strong command of the English language in speaking, reading and writing
  • Polished and professional presentation skills with a confident and persuasive approach to working in teams.
  • Proven skills in problem solving and conflict resolution, and the instincts to motivate and mobilize a wide range of personality types;
  • Experience with fleet management and dispatch software;
  • Leveraging new technologies and experience with JDE would be an asset;
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a competitive business environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel at the intermediate level with strong organizational skills
  • A familiarity with risk management and a good sense of humour will be an asset.
