The Opportunity:


The Public Engagement Advisor leads public participation activities for the City by creating a strategy for and implementing public participation initiatives that meaningfully engage stakeholders.

The Public Engagement Advisor provides strategic advice and plans to departments within the City to support their business needs and Council's focus areas.

This position provides reporting to help leaders make sound decisions and communicates to stakeholders on outcomes.


Responsibilities include:

  • Identify, plan, implement and evaluate strategic, inclusive and meaningful engagement with a variety of stakeholders adhering to the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) standards for community and stakeholder input
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop an understanding of the City's key business units, strategy and priorities
  • Identify appropriate tools and tactics to meet engagement objectives, including inperson facilitation and digital engagement methods
  • Communicate engagement activities through briefings, presentations, fact sheets, reports and other materials to decision makers and stakeholders through various channels
  • Be the lead on the City's public engagement software
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase public participation in engagement activities

You Bring:

  • Degree in Communications, Public Relations or a related field
  • Certified Public Participation Professional (CP3) designation is preferred
  • Certificate of Completion in the IAP2 Foundations in Public Participation is required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in public engagement
  • Experience developing and executing strategic engagement campaigns
  • Digitally savvy with experience in online engagement and engagement software platforms
  • Familiarity with trends, issues and best practices in public engagement
  • Experience using a wide range of inperson engagement tactics including facilitation experience
  • Experience working with diverse groups within the community
  • Strong project management, communication and organization skills
  • Strong skills and experience in research, survey design and techniques
  • Municipal government experience and knowledge of Airdrie would be an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build professional rapport and work collaboratively with all levels of the organization
  • High degree of professionalism, initiative, independence, confidentiality, tact and diplomacy
  • High degree of organizational awareness and the ability to prioritize work based on the organization's needs
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Political acumen with proven good judgement on approaches to political issues
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects and competing priorities
