Summary:

To provide a high level of customer service to visitors to the St.

Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, including welcoming visitors, carrying out cash transactions in the gift shop and admissions and providing shipping and general tourism information and assisting with programming and special events as required.


Duties and Responsibilities:

(These set out the principal functions of the position, and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements.)

  • Greet all visitors to the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre in a timely and courteous manner in order to create a positive visitor experience.
  • Provide assistance to guests looking for tourism information, including information about the site, shipping, the Welland Canals, the Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum and general information.
  • Carry out cash sales, including the use of Point Of Sale system.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Hospitality Services Associate, prepare daily admission and attendance reports and balance cash receipts.
  • Maintain and replenish tourism printed materials and carry out general maintenance of the tourism information areas.
  • Promote onsite events, programs and memberships to the general public.
  • Provide a high level of customer service within the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre including processing sales, admissions, memberships, donations, maintaining databases, inventory and merchandising.
  • Update information boards throughout the lobby and website including canal schedule.
  • Process Museum and facility bookings including event inquiries and fulfillment of tourism and event packages.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Monitor the closed circuit security system and report problems and unusual occurrences to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with Public Programming, as required, including providing support during guided tours and security in the galleries.
  • Greet bus tours upon arrival and departure and record group tour information.
  • Provide excellent customer service; respond to needs of all customers and staff as required.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required.

Position Requirements:


  • High School Diploma or general educational development (GED) certificate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Enjoy interaction with individuals of all ages and diversities.
  • Experience working in the retail or tourism field, preferably in a cultural setting.
  • Time management skills to handle adjustment in visitation levels.
  • Ability to juggle a variety of tasks at the same time.
  • Proven cash handling and customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of the Niagara area, specifically the City of St. Catharines and the Welland Canal.
  • Bilingual is an asset.


  • Valid

  • Standard First Aid / CPR C Certification as recognized through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
  • Valid, unrestricted Class "G" driver's licence held in good standing.
  • Working knowledge and experience with the Occupational Health and Safety Act in particular as it relates to maintenance and construction activities (e.g. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fall arrest). A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
  • Able to work shift work as required of this seven day a week operation. Must be available for overtime as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with mínimal supervision, coordinate / plan work and function as part of a team.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with a strong sense of public service and cooperation, and well developed abilities to deal with the public and citizens' groups.
  • Basic computer skills, experience with Microsoft Office Suite an asset.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job as described in the physical demands analysis (PDA).

CUPE 1287 Pay Group 1 - $18.09 to $20.67 per hour

Expected Hours of Work:24 hours per week
