Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of experienced professionals, the Design Manager will oversee the design process for recently secured and upcoming projects.

This includes all project phases, from inception to final completion.


The Design Manager will play a key role in assisting with bid preparation & submission, alternative delivery (P3), design/build contracts, negations, and the selection process for design teams.

This includes the evaluation of key design firms, partnering and sub-contract packages, and the continual monitoring, documentation, and distribution of information between all key project participants.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assist in the targeting, selection, appointment and management of project design consultants
  • Liaise and develop relationships with the design team, general contractor, and subconsultants
  • Assist in the negotiation of project design fees, scope of work, terms and conditions
  • Select, or have input into the selection of, specialist subcontractors or other organizations that will help complete the project or the work
  • Advise on the selection of materials used and other aspects of procurement
  • Lead the design team in value management and engineering exercises
  • Determine, define and monitor design schedules and deliverables
  • Implement design review cycles during proposal development and design development
  • Review the design to ensure compliance with customer requirements, achieving regulatory and legislative requirements, economic feasibility and constructability of project design
  • Conducting financial, technical and operational risk assessments and advising on risks, opportunities and potential hazards
  • Keeping current with relevant regulations, codes and legislation
  • Chairing design meetings, writing reports and giving presentations
  • Monitor and review design consultant performance, including providing design performance evaluations and recommendations on companyrelated design assignments
  • Manage select development projects to ensure compliance between design, construction and development requirements and provide liaison between design and construction team

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:


  • University degree specializing in Construction Management or Civil Engineering, or combination of an Architecture degree and general contracting experience
years of relevant industry experience with focus on large-scale transportation and transit related infrastructure, with preference for direct experience within the North American market

  • Alternative Delivery (P3/AFP) experience and/or conventional Design Build procurement experience, an asset
  • Experienced in managing the design management process from inception to project handover on large projects
  • Experience working on heavy civil infrastructure such as roads, bridges, rail or other similar projects is an asset
  • Proficient in the use of common industry and project management related software such as MS Office, Primavera, AutoCAD and REVIT
