Working for the Dean of Students


The Vice Provost and Dean of Students (DoS) is responsible for providing a number of specialized support services that help students achieve success and reach their academic potential.

The Dean of Students' supports all students on the university's numerous campuses and so must employ creative strategies to meet the diverse needs of a large student population.


Position


Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Student Life (ADSL), the Manager is responsible for directing Student Conduct and Accountability (SCA) in accordance with the goal of maintaining the safety and integrity of the University Community.

The Manager oversees two Student Conduct Officers, a Student Integrity and Citizenship Officer and an Educational Program Designer.


Mandated by GFC policy, the SCA ensures that violations of the Student Conduct Policy (SCP) and the Student Academic Integrity Policy (SAIP) are appropriately investigated and sanctioned when warranted for all University of Alberta campuses.

Addressing highly visible and sensitive matters, the SCA Manager must balance the safety of the community with the goal of student development and learning.

A substantial component of SCA's role is to mitigate, manage and prevent significant risks to the University's reputation, as well as the risk of judicial review of discipline decisions and other civil litigation against the University.


Duties

  • Receive and clarify as needed complaint files from Deans, Unit Directors and University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS)
  • Conduct thorough and detailed investigations in accordance with the SAIP
  • Meet with complainants, accused students, advisors and lawyers, witnesses and victims of SCP violations
  • Be able to adhere to and clearly explain University processes when criminal lawyers and other external advisors become involved
  • Receive procedural and legal requests and make decisions on process
  • Maintain the integrity of the University's processes when criminal or other processes occur simultaneously
  • Generate independent, arm's length discipline decisions, including written summary of allegations, description of investigation, decision on whether the student was responsible for the offence(s) as charged, and impose appropriate sanction(s) in accordance with the SCP, including reasons, based on the requirements of administrative law
  • Hear and decide on appeals under the Student Misconduct Ticket Procedure
  • Hear and decide on appeals of Director, Student Care decision not to proceed with an investigation and charges under the SCP
  • Maintain arm's length relationship in decisions made on behalf of the University
  • Complete shortterm and longterm strategic planning to meet the goals of the University
  • Formalize the implementation of strategic initiatives and services in consultation with the VP DS
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify strategic plans when deemed necessary
  • Responsible for the University of Alberta academic integrity program
  • Evaluate existing program and needs assessment for improvement to ensure maximum effectiveness of the academic integrity program
  • Participate in campus activities, such as student and teacher orientations
  • Advise students and instructors on matters of academic integrity and relevant sections of the SCP
  • Provide inclass workshops on academic integrity,
