This is a district itinerant position reporting to the Principal of Mission Secondary School.

The Secondary Counsellors work as a team with support staff and are responsible for providing counseling services to all secondary schools.

This position may involve some evening hours and will be determined as needed. The incumbent will be entitled to 5 lieu days as a result of the August start date.


Qualifications:

  • A valid BC teaching certificate
  • Master's Degree in Counselling Psychology or School Counselling
  • Experience as a Counsellor working with secondary school students and adult learners
  • Successful teaching experience at the secondary school level an asset
  • Experience the current Graduation program, government requirements and forms and working with students in Grades 101
  • Experience in the preparation and adjudication of Individual Education Plans
  • Experience liaising with community and postsecondary institutions
  • Familiarity with employment counseling strategies would be an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, administrators and counselors
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with BCeSIS including the ability to change and revise student timetables
  • Successful teaching experience with atrisk youth, preferably in an alternate educational setting
  • Successful experience with students with a variety of learning/behaviour issues (category Q, R and H) and other Special Education designations
  • Ability to Case Manage students with complex social/emotional/behavioural and academic needs, specifically IEPs, designations and facilitation of the ICM process
  • Experience and ability to relate and connect with high risk students in a nonjudgmental patient and optimistic manner will be an asset.
  • Strong relationship and collaboration skills working with schoolbased professionals as well as community partners, students and parents would be an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability in using computers and a variety of technology tools for learning, including but not limited to social networking, search techniques, software knowledge, distributed learning and online curriculum options
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of support agencies for youth in the Mission community, including but not limited to MCFD (SW and CYMH), Fraser Health, Mission Community Services, Fraser House, Child and Youth Crisis Program, Xyolhemeylh
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the needs and demands of the profession
  • Willingness to practice and promote cultural sensitivity and awareness
  • Provide testing release time for learning centre teacher as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team focused environment an asset
  • Training in the area of nonviolent crisis intervention has taken nonViolent Crisis Intervention Training or Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training.

General Duties:

  • To provide collaborative consultation regarding service delivery and inclassroom support
  • Call and chair Integrated Case Management (ICM) meetings as required by the Ministry of Education
  • Create and Implement IEPs/SLPs as required by the Ministry of Education
  • Collaborate and communicate with parents/caregivers and community agencies on an as needed basis
  • Organize and assist with invigilation for Provincial exams
  • Development of Student Learning Plans for Distributed Learning students
  • Review and correct Transcript Verification Reports
  • To provide counseling and learning assessment services for students leading to BC Dogwood and Adult Graduations
  • To facilitate student success and course completion rates
  • To coordinate and implement development of student learning assessment and designated student IEP's
  • To liaise with the school of record, provision of support and advocacy for students who are crossenrolled
  • To liaise with postsecondary institutions
  • To provide employment counselling to students as required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, parents and staff to enhance the school as a learning community.
  • Evidence of personal initiative and strong work ethic
