Working collaboratively with the OCAD University (OCAD U) Student Wellness Centre (SWC) team and reporting to the Manager, Student Wellness Centre, the Health Promoter is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of wellness education, awareness initiatives, outreach, and navigation for OCAD U students, with a specific focus on student mental health.

The SWC is comprised of various services including counselling, case management, accessibility services, peer wellness, and healthcare, as well as administration of the student health and dental plan.

The Health Promoter will be responsible for increasing awareness and understanding of SWC programs and services, acting as a navigator to build connections, and identify critical health and wellness issues impacting the OCAD U student population to in turn activate education, programming and events.


Summary of Responsibilities:


  • In collaboration with the SWC team and OCAD U student community, identify the critical wellness issues to develop and build awareness, education, and engagement.
  • Adapt, create, edit, and update a variety of wellness resources, including ongoing review and campuswide training related to the Supporting Students in Distress protocol and other mental health awareness initiatives
  • Create effective outreach strategies to target the dynamic and diverse OCAD U student community, motivating students to engage and participate
  • Facilitate collaboration between students and other campus and community service providers for joint programs and presentations for wellness engagement
  • Develop and deliver health promotion sessions in relation to the student health and dental plan, UHIP and other resources
  • Work collaboratively with SWC Peer Wellness Educators to provide health promotion support with the development of their wellnessbased initiatives
  • Support campuswide initiatives where health promotion expertise would be an asset
  • Respond sensitively, responsibly, and calmly to students who present with concerns, providing navigation support and referral to appropriate information and services across the University
  • Provide administrative support including, but not limited to booking rooms, program registrations, and mailings
  • Update and administer wellness education program surveys and evaluations, maintaining data for purposes of program review, reporting and quality improvement
  • Establish relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders across OCAD U, including student groups, various departments and external providers
  • Gather, compile, and update the information required to develop relevant and quality resource information in print and digital materials such as posters, brochures, videos, and for the website and social networks
  • Create and maintain brave spaces to encourage student engagement, social connection, and community
  • Assist the Manager, SWC, Dean of Students, and work collaboratively with other SWC staff on related tasks that contribute to the successful operation of the Student Wellness Centre

Qualifications:


  • Undergraduate degree in a related field, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing health promotion, or equivalent experience providing mentorship, guidance and/or support
  • Foundational knowledge of Art, Design, and New Media an asset
  • An appreciation for and knowledge of harm reduction, mental health, substance use, traumainformed care, antioppression, and cultural safety
  • Awareness of the impacts of historical and ongoing colonialism and intergenerational trauma for Indigenous, Metis and Inuit communities, and demonstrated commitment to decolonization
  • Team player, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently, and display a high degree of initiative
  • Excellent analytical, and problemsolving skills; ability to respond to a variety of needs across various stakeholders
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience with group facilitation and presentations
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and juggle competing demands
  • Proven judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters and the ability to respond tactfully, calmly and with sound judgement to crisis situations, seeking consultation appropriately
  • Experience creating and facilitating workshops, groups, and events with a focus on student engagement
  • Strong commitment to accessibility, service navigation, and firm knowledge of the social determinants of health
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working alongside a young adult population, preferably within a postsecondary environment
