The purpose of this position is to create and promote an organizational culture of employee and workplace safety.

To assist client groups in matters related to occupational health and safety law; develop and implement initiatives in collaboration with others that are aimed at raising awareness; increase employee knowledge of safe work practices; develop and implement health and safety programs; conduct health and safety assessments, conduct follow-up investigations of accidents and incidents; and develop/deliver health and safety related training programs.

This position will support Unity Health Toronto, which includes St. Joseph¿s Health Centre, St. Michael Hospital, Providence Health Care and satellite sites but will be mainly based at St. Joseph's Health Centre.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and work practices in compliance with federal, provincial and municipal legislation requirements, standards and best practices such as incident investigation and reporting, workplace inspection, prevention of workplace violence, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, asbestos management, mold management, waste water damage, confined space entry, lock out/tag out, contractor safety, designated substances etc.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of the Health and Safety Management System at each respective site.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) programs.
  • Bring forward risk mitigation measures and implement action item to minimize risk to staff.
  • Assesses occupational health and safety training needs; and where needed develop and deliver the training (e.g., WHMIS, workplace inspection, health and safety competency training, etc.).
  • Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive safety learning framework, and the development of programs to meet the safety learning needs of our staff.
  • Assesses and continually improves learning resources related to employee safety. Ensures best practices and legal obligations under relevant legislation are met when developing resources.
  • Develops leadership teams¿ safety knowledge and helps build a culture of safety at Unity Health Toronto that is in line with our Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan.
  • Consults and advises managers, union/employee associations and safety committees on workplace health and safety; regulations and best practices that affect the organization.
  • Advises/consults with leadership team of their responsibilities as competent supervisors.
  • Designs and manages an effective workplace inspection program and provides expert guidance to all leadership staff responsible for completing inspections. Evaluates effectiveness of the program and initiates collaboration with leadership staff to improve the program as required.
  • Develops and recommends occupational health and safety policies, procedures and SOPs; and occupational and environmental considerations are considered in procurement, facility design/renovations, etc.
  • Conduct incident followup and investigations into critical injuries, work refusal and work stoppage, as well audit to ensure compliance with all aspects of the workplace safety program.
  • Leads the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)/Globally Harmonized System (GHS) program.
  • Leads the personal protective equipment (PPE) program.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and risk assessments.
  • Provides information and education to individual employees or departments on health protection and risk.
  • Performs respiratory fittesting when needed.
  • Act as a resource for and support the Joint Health & Safety Committee and other committees aimed at protecting the health and safety of workers.
  • May be required to respond to emergency codes (i.e. brown and grey) during and offhours.
  • Liaise with departments on issues of worker safety.
  • Source third party vendors, coordinate, implement solutions and evaluate projects as needed.
  • Data collection and analysis, produce reports, identify trends and develop and implement preventative strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:


  • Bachelors of Science, Safety, Applied Environmental Services or related.
  • Masters in Occupational and Environmental Health, is an asset.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is required (or is working towards it)
  • Minimum of 3 years¿ experience in health and safety in a healthcare setting
  • Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is an asset.
  • Strong commitment to occupational health and safety in healthcare
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety; and related legislation, regulations, standards, best practices and guidelines
