Hiring Unit:

International Student Services (ISS) supports the growth, progress, and success of all international students (including visiting and exchange students) at McGill and aims to ease their transition to a new university, a new home and a new country.

They provide a range of services and resources for international students including orientation webinars, immigration advising, health insurance guidance, and social and cultural programming and events.


Position Summary:
Under the guidance of the Manager and in coordination with 2-3 other Orientation Assistants:
Handle the set-up, running, and take-down of the ISS Meet & Greet Lounge:

  • Set up and replenishe snacks, drinks, ISS swag, pamphlets, maps and posters.
  • Act as host within the lounge: engaging new students in conversation, answering questions, providing referrals and directions.
  • Track and report on the number of students visiting the lounge and captures their feedback.
  • Set up laptop and projector for infosessions.

Plan Bitesize MTL weekend excursions:

  • Lead groups of new international students on excursions.
  • Complete summary report on each excursion.
Provide logístical support - and acts as a student host - for the International Student Welcome Reception (Sept. 21 afternoon/evening)

  • Help with event setup, registration, and crowd management.
  • Act as host and event activity leader.
  • Act as a resource and referral point to new international students.
  • Complete summary report of each event.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Awareness of and sensitivity towards international students' needs and issues.
  • Indepth knowledge of McGill services and resources.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy, and respect the privacy and confidentiality of student communications and interactions.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and problemsolve.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 (spoken) and 2 (written) on a scale of 04.

Minimum Training and/or Education:
- must be currently enrolled as a McGill degree student and eligible for the Work-study program.


Period:
Last two weeks of August & Sept 3, 4, 8, 21 (evenings/weekends)
