The Medical Physics Department at the Walker Family Cancer Centre (WFCC) in St. Catharines is seeking a full-time permanent Physics Assistant.

The department provides scientific and technical support for the Radiation Treatment Program, including:

treatment and imaging equipment maintenance, performing and development of quality assurance tests, design and fabrication of specialized devices for therapy, dose measurement and calculation, radiation safety, and the development and implementation of new and improved radiation treatment techniques.

The department has formal links with Brock University and conducts research on novel linear accelerator QA methods.

The successful applicant will join a team currently comprised of four physicists, one physics assistant, one biomedical technologist, one Systems Administrator, and one Enterprise Architect.

Equipment at WFCC includes 3 Elekta Synergy linear accelerators, 1 Canon Aquilion Exceed LB CT Simulator, C-Rad Catalyst and Sentinel Surface Guidance systems, and the Pinnacle Treatment Planning System (TPS).

The cancer centre is currently undergoing an equipment replacement cycle and will be installing and commissioning a Varian Edge, as well as the Raystation TPS in 2024.

Two additional linear accelerator replacements are planned for 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The individual will be performing quality assurance tests on radiation therapy and physics equipment, taking corrective action in consultation with a supervising physicist.

They will also be responsible for maintaining comprehensive records of quality assurance tests, procedures and measurements, performing routine MOSFET and other patient dosimetry during radiation therapy, and performing routine radiation protection tasks such as area surveys under the supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer.

The incumbent will assist physicists and radiation therapists during radiation therapy procedures and performing other related duties, projects, and activities as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Honours BSc in Physics or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a medical physics environment an asset
  • Demonstrated computer skills and ability to use spreadsheets, word processors, and databases
  • Previous programming experience, specifically Python, is an asset
  • Experience with mathematical software packages an asset
  • Familiarity with 3D printing and CAD design is an asset
  • Demonstrated mathematical proficiency and excellent analytic skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in both official languages (English and French) will be considered an asset.
  • Regular and consistent attendance required
  • Vaccines (COVID19 and others) are a new hire requirement of the job unless you have an exemption based on medical or on a ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code
