The Mental Health Counsellor is responsible for providing mental health services to frequent helpline callers over a short period of time to determine how to support repeat callers best.

The counsellor will also gather data to determine reasons behind repeat callers and support initiatives to help support callers to use referrals for specialized services.

The Mental Health Counsellor may aid in supporting the development of educational resources for public consumption.


Role Responsibilities

  • Conduct professional counselling sessions with repeat/regular helpline callers
  • Set and help achieve goals, address challenges and support the usage of relevant external resources
  • Support the development of educational resources about mental health for public use as needed
  • Adhere to helpline guidelines and policies when conducting day to day activities
  • Maintain a calm, professional and respectful demeanor during every call
  • Update call log at the end of each shift to ensure all documentation is complete
  • Communicate with helpline manager to report issues, seek guidance or debrief as required
  • Ensure confidentiality of callers as well as any other highly sensitive information is maintained

Qualifications and Experiences

  • Counselling Qualification: certification, diploma, degree or master's degree
  • Focus in Psychology, Social Services, Therapy, Counselling or Psychotherapy
  • 25 years' experience is required
  • Experience in motivational interviewing, solutionfocused brief therapy, or other shortterm therapeutic approaches an asset
  • Knowledge of Islamic traditions and conduct
  • Value the intrinsic worth of others irrespective of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religious determination
  • Be open to feedback and willing to act upon feedback provided
  • Be able to offer unconditional positive regard to others regardless of their life story and life choices
