JOB SUMMARY


The Powerhouse Operator is responsible for the ongoing operation of the generating station to ensure the equipment is functioning properly and maintain the highest level of electricity generation possible.

The Operator is also responsible for keeping the facilities and the equipment clean and safe.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential responsibilities of the job include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:

  • Maintain communications with the Chaudière Dam, Energy Ottawa Management and Hydro Ottawa
  • Operate generators (Start, stop and adjust as required depending on water provided, instructions from Chaudière Dam and ice/frazil conditions)
  • Monitor site security cameras and address issues (call police or on call supervisor if required)
  • Monitor powerhouses and equipment responding to alarms (vibration, hot bearings, water levels, fire, etc.)
  • Perform regular routine inspections and rounds to check that all electrical and mechanical equipment is functioning properly and report to management or shut down equipment immediately when necessary
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments as necessary including troubleshooting problems that arise (e.g. add water to batteries, add air to governor pumps, change/add oil in bearings, compressor, High Pressure Units, replace filters, fuses, worn or defective parts, light bulbs, etc.)
  • Ensure the optimal temperature within the facilities for equipment and workers are maintained
  • Set up, monitor and remove sump pumps when required
  • Perform electrical switching and grounding as required
  • Clean, grease and oil equipment on a regular basis
  • Perform routine safety inspections, document and address issues as required
  • Lockout on equipment as required
  • Report all incidents and deficiencies to Management and call for assistance as required
  • Participate in all emergency management situations and conditions (e.g. blackouts, oil spills, floods, fires, etc.)
  • Maintain cleanliness of Powerhouse (sweep & wash floors, clean washrooms and windows, dust equipment, etc.)
  • Assist with onboarding of external contractors, perform safety review of work plans including issuing tailboards and providing work and job site orientation
  • Escort visitors and contractors through facilities as required
  • Operate trash rack machine and manually remove debris from trash racks when necessary (may require use of a chainsaw, sledge hammer, pike poles, etc.)
  • Operate vehicles and equipment including but not limited to light duty vehicles, loaders and powerhouse cranes (bridge cranes and jib cranes)
  • Identify when supplies/parts are needed; on occasion may place orders and pick up supplies
  • Perform all other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Secondary school diploma, with 35 years of experience in an industrial setting; or
  • Technical college diploma/degree, preferably a mechanical or electrical discipline or trades certificate, and preferably with experience in an industrial setting

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Ontario or Quebec driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain forklift operator certification
  • English essential
  • Bilingual (English and French) considered an asset
The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Chaudière Services Inc. and Unifor Local 33.
