BGC has openings for casual, part time Activity Leaders at our Fraserview and Kimount Clubs located in Vancouver and our Langley Club.

In addition to providing recreational/social programming, this position includes a focus on supporting, mentoring, and tutoring youth (grades 8 to 12), helpding them to achieve their goals and meet their potential throughout high school and beyond.

Summary of Responsibilities
The Activity Leader plans, develops, and implements recreational, social, and/or educational activities for children/youth who visit Club programs. They strive to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere in order to encourage client participation in programs.


JOB DUTIES

  • Helps to ensure that the social/recreational needs of the children and families who visit the Club are met.
  • Leads programs that follow BGC program standards, guidelines, and policies.
  • Develops and fosters positive relationships with participants.
  • May participate in the development of individual plans for participants as needed.
  • Encourages and facilitates the participation of individuals in the program by creating a fun and enjoyable atmosphere in order to enhance the program's appeal to participants.
  • Maintains uptodate knowledge of new trends in activities/programming.
  • Maintains awareness of any problems _(medical, behavioural, or other)_ experienced by participants and informs the Programmer or Coordinator as applicable.
  • Maintains appropriate records and statistics and ensures that all required documentation is accurate and complete _(e.g., incident reports, daily log sheets, member systems, etc.)_.
  • Models' appropriate behaviour and dresses appropriately for the specific program needs.
  • Recognizes volunteer rights and supports and cooperates with volunteers in the programs.
  • Informs the Programmer or Coordinator as applicable, of any problems or concerns regarding participants, Jr. Leaders, Volunteers, etc.
  • Adheres to program policies, procedures, child/youth protection procedures, and other protocols from training and team meetings.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Ensures the facility is safe and clean during all activities and that supplies, etc. are put away after programs.
  • Cooperates and works with Club services staff in carrying out safety/emergency procedures.
  • May be assigned to lead specialized programs or do onetoone work as appropriate.
  • Other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Clear Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • Postsecondary training/courses in recreation or a related field.
  • Experience working with groups of children/youth in a social recreational setting and planning activities.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings.
  • Valid Emergency First Aid (8 hr. course) and CPR certification _(must be obtained within 3 months)_.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training _(must be obtained within 3 months)._
  • Participates in BGC's Agency training.
  • Second language and experience working with culturally diverse people are assets.
  • Excellent interpersonal behaviour and communication skills.
  • Proven organization and time management skills _(must be able to be on time for all shifts)_.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.

Additional Assets

  • Experience providing academic support and guidance to children and/or youth
  • Second language
  • Class 4 driver's license


Position starts at $17 per hour (moving to $17.50 at six months), 4% vacation pay, employee assistance plan and 5 paid sick days per year.
