The Specialist provides technical services, support, and national coordination in the management of Corporate Real Estate Environment and Sustainability.

Provides a broad range of expertise and input on environmental policy, assessment and compliance management, sustainable design and operating standards, and heritage property management.

These include writing business cases, developing presentations, managing minor projects and corporate environmental program data management and reporting.


Contributes to development of CRE policies and processes, and conducts and coordinates environmental site assessments, impact assessments, studies and surveys.

Develops environmental risk mitigation and remediation strategies.

Supports all Real Estate functions, including Planning, Project Delivery, and in particular, Regional Facilities Management (FM) Managers and Specialists, in managing environmental and related due diligence requirements.


Responsibilities:

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Specialist, CRE Environment and Sustainability.


  • Provides technical services, case management and expertise as well as national coordination in the development and implementation of CRE environmental policies and processes, including impact assessment, site assessment, mitigation plans, monitoring and compliance assurance, and ensuring a rigorous and consistent approach.
  • Develops annual environmental plans for CRE portfolio of properties and ensures new and evolving environmental issues are addressed. Provides support to the manager in developing the CRE environment and sustainability management system and annual program plan.
  • Conducts research, studies, surveys and audits to assess program issues and compliance. Analyzes results, and develops and presents recommendations to improve performance. Consults with both internal and external stakeholders and develops a variety of program guidance documentation and communications material.
  • Prepares content to meet applicable regulatory reporting requirements and ensures quality, completeness and timeliness of reporting.
  • Prepares periodic environmental reporting content and provides support to the manager in developing the CRE annual environmental report provided to the Board of Directors. Coordinates and compiles input from CRE colleagues and SP, and creates content.

Job Responsibilities (continued):


  • Provides technical environmental and sustainability due diligence perspective, input and cost benefit financial analysis during the development and review of real estate business cases involving a proposed change. Ensures alignment with corporate priorities and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures environment and sustainability business cases are complete and in accordance with Corporate Investment guidelines. Prepares business case and presentation materials for final executive review and approval. Ensures all records of decision are obtained and recorded.
  • Participates in or directly leads aspect-specific environmental programs and real estate environmental projects (including assessment, risk management or remediation). Develops scopes of work for Requests for Proposals for third party services and undertakes contract management activities for supplier agreements. Considers all contingencies and ensures that all programs and projects are delivered on-time and on-budget as planned. Tracks progress, approves payment of invoices and liaises regularly with key stakeholders.
  • Facilitates and troubleshoots to resolve sensitive environmental and sustainability issues to the satisfaction of the client and service provider, while ensuring a safe and healthy work environment, avoiding disruption to operations and meeting legislated requirements. Interprets regulatory requirements and works with internal and external parties (e.g. contractors) to accommodate a solution or resolution. Collaborates closely with regional FM teams. Develops and nurtures effective working relationships with all Real Estate functions including Planning and Project Delivery, as well as with service providers and enabling functions to promote cooperation, environmental awareness, and alignment.

Qualifications:


Education

  • Bachelor degree in Environmental Management, or Environmental or Sustainability Engineering or Environmental Assessment / Environmental Planning field; or other Engineering degree with certificate / accreditation in environmental engineering.
  • Masters level education an asset.
  • Certified Designation as Environmental Professional will be an asset
