Job Description:

***:Under the general supervision of the Sport Development Coordinator, and the technical direction and guidance of the Neighbourhood Lead, is responsible for assisting in developing rapport with, and acting as a support for, neighbourhood residents. Works with the Healthy Kids HOME Program Coordinator (Thunder Bay District Health Unit) and Neighbourhood Lead to develop and implement programming; liaise with community organizations, project partners, Neighbourhood Leads, and fellow Neighbourhood Program Coordinators.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Collaborates with Neighbourhood Lead to plan and implement neighborhoodbased recreation programs that will engage priority neighbourhood families.
  • Collaborates with local organizations to schedule and implement programming within priority areas of nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco control or other health promotion areas.
  • Assists with connecting families with community services and programs.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with other service providers in the community.
  • Works closely with staff from other priority neighborhood sites to assist in developing and sharing resources.
  • Recruits and engages participants to programs and Healthy Kids sites by building trusting relationships and learning about the families who live in the priority neighbourhoods, including through outreach activities such as doorknocking.
  • Plans and implements food programs such as community meals, community kitchens and access to emergency food in collaboration with relevant service providers.
  • Provides safe and fun environment for children to play in during adult programs. Implements appropriate behavior management strategies as needed.
  • Assists in preparing and monitoring Healthy Kids sites, including securing necessary supplies and equipment, identifying needs for alterations, maintenance or repair, conducting safety inspections; ensuring that rules and regulations are followed with respect to staff, service providers, and participants.
  • Plans and implements recreational activities at events and during programming.
  • Adheres to procedures and operational manuals as needed.
  • Assists with data collection, gathers feedback regarding community needs and assets, and maintains documentation required for program evaluation.
  • Participates in regular meetings with City of Thunder Bay Sport Development Coordinator, Healthy Kids HOME Program Coordinator, Neighbourhood Leads and other Neighbourhood Program Coordinators and Planning Team, and attends other relevant meetings when requested.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Secondary school diploma;
  • Two years' recent experience in recreation programming specifically for ages 513 and administration;
  • Volunteer management experience;
  • Proven leadership experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in community recreation and/or children's programs and/or related volunteer experience;
  • Demonstrated involvement in coaching, teaching and working with children in a recreation/sport setting

Skills/Abilities:


  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Selfstarter with strong organizational skills, project/time management, analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Proven ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment, while respecting and valuing the diversity of communities and individuals
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Must be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Must possess and maintain a valid C
