The Program
336-42 Barrhead Community Rover


This community-based diverse-abilities program supports a male person-served living with non-verbal developmental disabilities and other mental health challenges, to live a full life with personalized care that maximizes independence, supports unique strengths and qualities, and encourages their enjoyment of social and recreational activities within the community.


IMPORTANT - There is a cat in the program, therefore staff should have no allergies and be comfortable around cats.


In Your Role You Will

  • Support individual to build life skills and participate in household chores which may include cooking healthy meals according to a set menu, laundry, house cleaning, etc. may sometimes require prompts and stepbystep instruction.
  • Provide person care/hygiene support to male individual requiring extra supports with toileting bathing, grooming, dental care, etc.
  • Drive individual, in your own vehicle, and participate with them in recreational, leisure activities and encourages opportunities for social interaction within the community.
  • Encourage good citizenship skills and building of relationships within their home and community
  • Assist and support individuals with developing and achieving personal goals.
  • Observe/document physical, developmental and psychological needs of individual in service.
  • Contribute toward design, implementation and evaluation of individual service plans, program specific policies & procedures.

The Position


The Disability Support Worker will support a non-verbal person-served at home and within the community with personal hygiene care (including toileting and bathing) and other supports that help them to overcome challenges, live as independently as possible, pursue their goals and enjoy a healthy social life.


Together the persons-served with support from the DSW enjoy an array of activities at home and within the community, including getting out into the community swimming, going to movies, hockey games, hanging out with friends or just quiet quiet time at home.


Criminal Record Check/Ministry Check Statement

Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

  • Understand nonverbal cues and work with persons with limited or hardtounderstand communication skills.
  • Be comfortable providing person care to male individual requiring extra supports with toileting and bathing.
  • Enjoy living a healthy and active lifestyle and participating in sports and recreational activities within thee community.
  • Experience supporting clients/patients with developmental disabilities and complex mental health needs.
  • High School Diploma/GED


  • MANDATORY

  • A valid Class 5 Driver License, clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle with suitable insurance.
  • Must be able to cook and follow healthy menu plans.
  • Cooking and cleaning are part of the responsibilities of this role
  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right to define/pursue their life choices, and participate in community events, employment and recreation.
  • Will also consider other experience such as LPN, Nursing or Health Care Aide &/or education in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education.

ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:

  • Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self help, etc.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
