    Description:

    Course number and title: HPS 240H1S The Influence of the Eugenics Movement on Contemporary Society

    Course description: This course explores present-day topics such as reproductive issues (including "designer babies" and genetic counselling), gender, racism/colonialism, disability, and euthanasia through the lens of the history of eugenics. A "scientific" movement which became popular around the world in the early twentieth century, eugenics was based on the principle that certain undesirable human characteristics were hereditary and could be eliminated by controlled reproduction. It resulted in the enactment of laws in numerous places, including Canada, authorizing coerced reproductive sterilization of certain individuals, and other measures intended to "improve" humanity. Today, we see its influences woven through contemporary debates, a number of which we will consider.

    Estimated course enrolment: between 65 (expected final enrollment) and 100 (the cap)

    Estimated TA support: 130 hours

    Class schedule: Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

    Sessional dates of appointment: January 1 to April 30, 2025

    Salary: Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term - $10,570.02

    Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

    Required qualifications: PhD in the History of Science or a cognate field such as History. Experience in teaching.

    Preferred qualifications: Evidence of excellence in teaching in the history of science, ideally in the history of biology or another area directly related to the course material.

    Description of duties: Preparation and delivery of course materials; preparation and delivery of assignments; supervision of teaching assistants, if applicable; marking of student work; submission of grades to university officials; reasonable student contact and office hours.
