Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, plans and executes laboratory projects and experiments. Performs technical tasks in the field of biology, chemistry, physiology, etc. Selects and modifies methodology. Analyses and interprets data. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Participates in manuscript preparation. Maintains equipment.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


This person will be overseeing an active shared-space lab environment that includes wet labs, and other rooms such as microscopy and tissue culture.

It is a very dynamic research group and we are looking for someone who likes working as part of a team and is enthusiastic to see research move forward.

The Pain Centre has a mix of both shared and private (PI) research space.


The type of tasks include:

  • Overseeing the shared research spaces of the Duff complex. This includes overseeing the booking system for these spaces, and ensuring that those using these areas are properly qualified before they do so. This person will also serve as the first point of contact for any necessary work orders to maintain the complex, submitting them and following up to ensure that needed repairs are made in a timely fashion.
  • They will be help the Pain Centre with the logisitics, organization and execution of its many activities (Pain Day, lectures, meetings) including AV aspects.
  • They will act as resource person for the Centre in terms of lab and building issues. They are expected to resolve problems related to this and educate other members as needed on how things work, including methodologies, the use of equipment and techniques, and give guidance on analyzing results.
  • They will be expected to be actively engaged in the preparation of the annual reporting instruments that the Pain Centre is required to produce. This includes reports on lab usage statistics, and reports on the Centre's shared labs operations.
  • They will ensure that all personnel who use these spaces are properly qualified to do so, and will ensure that all personnel comply with applicable safety and other regulations for using the equipment. They are also to ensure that all hazardous materials in these shared labs are properly handled, stored and disposed of when required.
  • They will be responsible for the oversight of equipment in this shared space that belongs to the Centre itself (not PIs). They are expected to perform regular maintenance and safety checks on the equipment, and to arrange for regularly servicing by qualified outside technicians when necessary.
  • They will maintain a regularly updated inventory of all Centre properly. They will maintain a record of where Centre equipment is at all times, including equipment which is loanded out to members in other buildings. They will also maintain an inventory of operating supplies, and will be expected to advise when new purchases are required to maintain the operating efficiency of the Centre.
  • They will be required to perform regular accounting functions, monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. They will have to place orders for needed purchases using MMP, POs and PCard.
  • They are expected to keep abreast of new developments in the field so as maintain their skills and to continue to be a source of advice to other Members.
  • They will be expected to use a variety of equipment that is the Pain Centre's shared lab space and to instruct others as and when needed. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, electrophoresis apparatus, electrophysiological recording apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers and audiovisual equipment.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Undergraduate Degree (Biology or Sciences) - 2 years of related experience"

English spoken/written essential; French spoken required, written desirable

Use of IBM PC systems, including MS Word.

Familiarity with McGill FIS, MPP, Pcard, and related systems desirable.
