Posting Closing Date: 5/31/23The focus of the job is routine cleaning duties, materials management, minor maintenance and building security to ensure a clean and safe environment for the students, staff, visitors and the public at the assigned school or building and facilities. Custodial Trainees work under the supervision of the Senior Custodian on the afternoon shift and the Head Custodian when working dayshift, who provide training and feedback in custodial practices and procedures.


Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by maintenance and cleaning standards established by the department.

Work is completed in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations and guidelines.

The incumbent exercises some discretion in performing regular duties.

Custodial trainees to be instructed on the Division's heavy duty cleaning practices. Upon successful completion of the training program, trainees are transferred to the casual pool.

Trainees may work dayshift with Head Custodians or afternoon shift with Senior Custodians to gain a thorough knowledge and mastery of custodial tasks.


Qualifications:


  • High School
  • WHMIS 2015 is an asset
  • 5th Class Boiler Ticket is an asset
  • 5th Class Power Engineering or valid Building Operator "B" Certification is an asset
  • Knowledge of safety standards and safe use of chemical, tools and equipment acquired through trades related training or onthejob training
  • Experience in industrial cleaning methods and products, building maintenance techniques
  • Knowledge of OHS regulations is required
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs
  • Word, Outlook and the Internet is required
  • Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset
  • Physically able to complete the duties of the job using appropriate lifting tools and techniques
  • Ability to schedule and plan priorities and manage conflicting demands
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with other workers
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with teachers, students, coworkers and the general public.
